which radiator? swiftech MCR80 or the Black Ice Micro?

I think you guys are missing the point it looks like it’s about small rads and not the cheapest or best solutions

*seeing both are rated for 236.6 K Cal per hour (938.89 BTU per hour or 275W) and they are both about the same size I would spend the $1 more and get the swiftech mcr80 because it gives you two free fans or rather 2 fans for a $1

I use a couple of Swiftech MCR80s (didn't want to hack up my case). I'm getting very good cooling results but with only a single radiator the cooling would not be as good. If the Black Ice Micro II was available, I would have got that instead.

A couple things about the Swiftech; the fan mounting is a bit dangerous. There's probably less than 1/8" of leeway on one side before a mounting screw would puncture the rad core. Not a problem if you stick to the default fan + fan guard + washer but I added a CCFL so I had to be VERY careful with screw length. Actually I used #6 bolts and not screws to mount them - much better that way. The 15mm wide fans (2 per rad - push/pull) are very quiet (and expensive if you buy them separately). They don't have a RPM wire though. The hose connections are not barbed and prone to leaking unless you clamp them very tightly (the supplied plastic clamps are not up to the task).

Autozone

Yes I do.

ssgohan434 and I have exchanged emails about buying a core from Autozone, but he continues to throw up these threads with all these different cores. Been trying to steer him the right direction, but he does have issue's regarding not having tools to work with. Heater cores are the first choice. On a limited budget their even a better choice. Personally I would not use the two cores that are being mentioned above.

WOW you can get a 3" X 4" radiator or heater core at Auto Zone......do you have a part number for that.

No, but you can get a 6" x 7" that will fit his case. His plan is to add other items to be cooled outside of just the CPU.

OK, I didn’t know that as all he said was “Which radiator, Swiftech MCR80 or the Black Ice Micro?”
I understand why “I” would buy one of these there already set up out of the box, they will fit in almost any case with out any modification and are good for custom rigs like tiny LAN boxes or suitcase computers. And my reason for getting a bit defensive was when I was looking for similar ones (many others threads too) the response I would see 90% of the time would be “get a chevet heater core” (I have done the cores before too) but the point of the thread would always get lost so I was tiring to push the thread back on topic
I apologize if I came off overly sarcastic

Didn't hurt my feelings ;)
"If they build it, it will come" Genrally applies to heatercores and large carparts chains.

Since nearly any actual heatercore we use is found in "common" vehicles (not tractors/bobcats/catiplliars... big stuff) some wherehouse will have it somewhere.

Let's assume it's an oddball heatercore and they don't have it... They'll buy it from who dose at a discount, mark it up and you'll still save money LoL!

The heater core database...

k, im not getting a small 80mm thingy anymore. how about the Dtek pro core???

edit: i know i can get a Chevette heater core for about $17 at Autozone but then i hear that i have to change the barbs (whatever those are) to get it to work with my 1/2" setup

1966 mustang heater core. Warm up your tubing in boiling water for 30 seconds, then pop them on the pipes. No hacking necessary.

It is a big heatercore, but easy to work with. :D

ssgohan434,

After the many emails transactions we have had I am still not sure the direction your going. Placing the core in front of the stock 80mm fan will not be effective at all. That 80mm fan has to go and a 120mm fan put in its place with a shroud. The Dtek core is a perfect choice. Make sure you get the shroud too. The Dtek core is slightly shorter than the Chevy Chevette core. I believe Dtek cores were for a Ford Escort, but are new. I had one a few weeks ago in my shop.

This is a highly modified DTEK core.

You start out wanting to get something nice and small then they convince you to get something nice and big. Not too big it won't fit in your case, but bigger than you intended.

There was a reason he wanted a small core, ya know? What? Do these large heatercores meet that reasonable requirement too?

Considering that you by all likelyhood did not have any email transactions with ssgohan434 you do not know the complete story. His plan is to add aditional items to be cooled. Those small 80mm cores are not going to handle the load. Additionally to get air moving through the core it's going to take a high speed 80mm fan, along with some screaming sounds.....
