This article is great for evaluating Duron vs Tbrids .

A tbird at the same mutliplier and fsb speed as a duron will always outperform it, as it has more cache to work with. However, durons will often achieve a higher percentage overclock due to their being rated at lower speeds but having a ceiling similar to that of most tbirds, so from a simple point of view of ocing they are better.

so what if we swapped the t bird for a classic athlon,i presume the margin would be less noticable on benchmarks given that the classic has no on die cache?

It probably would be closer, but it's academic really as I don't see any reason why you'd want to get a slot A system if you were buying now - no upgrade path, no 133MHz fsb (unlike KT133a) and no DDR.
