I see fights brewing all the time about how video games require you to install dx9 and such and video this video that...blah blah blah.
Isnt a large part of directx sound too?
so like in one thread i read about GTA vice city being a directx 9 game...couldnt this involve the sound too

i don't believe any dx9 games exist either

Well directSound really hasn't had many improvements since DX7 mainly just marginal things, Direct 3D has really been the main aspect over the past few years

Video, sound, network, misc inputs(joystick, microphone)
Anything needed by the game/OS to communicate with the hardware.

exactly so when a game asks you install dx9 then perhaps it has nothing to do with video

I think Splinter Cell is optimized for DX9
