I've just installed a GeForce2 MX 32Mb to replace a Voodoo 2 and am getting screen lockups. I did have an AMD K62-300 processor but the following night changed that to an AMD K62-500. I am gradually working through the geforcefaq.com suggestions but as there is a squillion of them I wondered if anyone had any suggestions. A couple of points to consider though:
It hasn't yet locked up in a game, have tested it with Rally2000 and a couple of other racing sims. It also gets through a 3DMark 2000 benchmark without locking up (score 2400). It seems to occur in the most simple applications such as looking at properties of My Computer, opening a virus program etc.

When the screen locks the mouse pointer will still move just fine, although you can't click on anything.

The power supply is only 230W

I haven't yet upgraded the Bios

The motherboard is a Jetway 542B

Any suggestions as to the most likely solutions would be greatly appreciated, preferably avoiding the "throw it away" idea as I doubt my wallet credit card could handle it.

Thanks

I would guess the power supply might be the culprit, but what version drivers are you using?

i agree!!!!!! the problem is definately your p/s. my advise would be to upgrade to a 300 watt P/S with a fan either on the top or the bottom. this tends to help with system cooling.

I'm using the 6.50 drivers. I'll give the 300W PS a try. Actually it having been upgraded a couple of times I'd forgotten that it only had 230W, my kids have better than that. I'll steal theirs while they're not home.

The thing is there's no consistency to locking up, this morning I opened email then a browser, one click on that and it froze. Last night it went for quite a while (nothing flash being used) without freezing. In the main tho it freezes a lot.

When I first installed my Geforce2 GTS, I got random lockups too.... we tried different drivers, booting with just the video card installed, backing down the clock speeds, pretty much everything I could think of. Then I happened to look up a bit and noticed that my power supply was a something-something-300(that was the model number). Ok, thats cool, I thought. Then I read a little further... It was a piece of crap 165w model. I promptly went out and bought a 300watter, found out that it too was a piece(I no longer shop at that store after getting several bad boards, chips, power supplies, even incorrect advice on what works with what.) Anyway, long story short, I now buy everything online and have a quality 300w p/s. Although I'm looking at the new 650watter thats out there....

I didn't see it mentioned, but did you completely uninstall the Voodoo drivers? Often older drivers can cause a conflict.

I uninstalled the voodoo drivers with add/remove programs, would it be necessary to find and remove any other traces that may have remained?
