i dont think it would be good for 2 years, more like 4 or 5 :D unless the switch to 64bit goes mainstream alot faster then most people, ie MS and othe software programers, are thinking.

Then you would be able to run dual Opterons, Some sites are selling the dual MSI K8 motherboard, If you look around you should be able to find the link.

ANd I think the K8s are cheaper too. :attn:

I see you are thinking up a way to spend all that $$$ from that new job?? ;) I'm pretty sure it would last you a while, but you could also explore some new ground by going the K8 way as Mr $T$ suggested.... either duallie or Quad

If you're really looking that far, Id say wait for .09 micron Opterons or Noconas or whatever's the best at that time, we're on the back end of what we have now. That stuff would have a LOT more longevity, especially with 64 bit stuff.

If I seem to be contradicting myself, that's because I need a full workstation in a month.

Anyone here still using the computer they had two years ago?

As your main workstation?

Duals do have a much longer life than single CPU machines, but be honest with yourself. If you think, now, that the machine you were using two years ago is junk, then you may think the same thing two years from now.

(Two years is like four generations in computer time.)

Just a thought...

Eh, I went quite well with my old rig for about 2 years....that's about the limit, but Id be willing to go with a dual for 3 depending on market conditions with maybe just a video card upgrade.

I don't know about everyone else, here, but I can't go more than six months without upgrading something;)

Its a work board not a gaming board?

okay, just curious.

On the other hand, a work board might be well served by a workstation video card, like a Fire or QUADRO series card.

Its a server board, that's why....

Workstation boards are a few months in coming.
