Ok, i know the concept of ducting cool air to the HSF.

but could i find a way to duct the hot air from the cpu, to the outside of my case?, so my Mobo stays cooler. other than just adding more fans

my idea would be like this.......

I take a type of box...and put it over the HS. make sure there is a hole on top, for the Fan to blow onto the HS. then make like.....2 holes on each side, then make it duct air to the outside of my case ( one on each side, since my hs fin's are horzontal )....with fans on the ends of them, sucking the air out of the HS.

If i could get enough airflow pulling the hot air out......would it work to pull the hot air off the HS, outside my case?

I know if i just add enough fans to my comp......then it will cool the mobo. Plus if it could be pulled off........it may look kinda cool too.

would this even help? would it do any good? would it restric air getting off the hs, and just make my temps higher??

it would be a nice project......but i would need to find a good material to do it too.

it would be like......so none of the air that the HSF uses, even gets to the motherboard at all. outside air ducted to the HSF, and the hot air Ducted from the HS, to the outside of the case. Then fans, to keep everything else cool

just an idea.

Be very careful.

Why?

Because. I don't care how you set it up, whatever you're going to use to channel the air out of the heatsink allllll the way outside your case, is going to be fairly restrictive.

You'll need a more powerful fan than normal, which will equate to more noise, ect.

But try it and see, you'll enver know...

And if you're going to go this far, cut a hole in your case and duct fresh air into the heatsink.

IF you look at a motherboard wou will see a lot of warm components arranged in the spill out area around where the CPU fan is. This is not coincidence, even warm airflow over these components is better than none. Hence should you duct away all the air from the CPU you may need to take such measures as adding a northbridge fan etc. In a lot of cases the airflow from the CPU fan actually helps motherboard temperatures, if you want to see a benefit in changing things, think of replacing it with cooler air at same or better flow rates rather than removing it entirely.

A thought to consider:

turn the fan an your heatsink around and then duct the exhaust outside the case. This addresses the concerns that Toysrme and RoadWarrior brought up-
Not as much airflow restriction and there is still airflow moving over the components near the cpu.

This is actually a ducting method that has been used by OEMs for a while- not as effective as the methods we usually use around here for ultimate performance but very effective for noise control.

When i moved to watercooling, my northbridge temps shot ut from 30c to 45c, so i took off the passive cooler and put on an active copper one, but it still is in the 35c range.
