I'm preparing to buy a T-BRED B 1700+ DLT3C soon but would like to know what all of you would suggest needs to be changed on my system first.
Here is my setup :
- 250W no name PSU
- 256 meg DDR pc2100 generic
- MB Asus A7V266-E
- Current CPU : 1700+ Pally
- DVD , Burner, ...
My 1st concern is my MB. i know it supports the new CPU but can
I expect good ( or reasonable ) OC results with it ? I really don't want to shell out some cash on a new board.
I am definitly going to pickup a new PSU. Probably a Sparkle or Antec. I'm having trouble finding a website who sells Sparkle PSU's in Canada since Antec models are pretty expensive.
My memory will also be changed probably for some Crucial DDR.
Can I pickup some pc2700 or do I really need better memory ?
I'm planning to pickup the memory and CPU at excaliberpc.com as I am sure of the CPU I'm getting and they ship to Canada.
If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Antec 430 or 480 PSU or sparkle 350 or 400
buffalo 3200 with winbond @ newegg or hyperx pc3200
nforce mobo nf7-s or 8rda
Do you have a $ budget?

Is it really necessary for me to change my MB ? It really wasn't in my plans to change it.
I have no problem picking up a new PSU and memory.
I don't have a exact $ budget to keep but the cheaper the better.
As for the Mobo my bestfreind has my old a7v266 and yes IMO if you are wanting to get a good stable system and have the ability to get a good overclock I would suggest getting a new Mobo.

I forgot to mention my vid card : ASUS V7100 GeFORCE-2 MX400 64M PURE
I will change it sooner or later. No planning to anytime soon.
Also what kind of cooling are you looking @ a stock hsf or what I would get something from the slk series with a good cfm fan.

I've started looking into getting a new HSF ( slk series ).
Didn't check yet for a good CFM fan.

dude, if u want o/c like 2.2 to 2.3ghz u will need much better setup, as jonspd said u will bee new mobo (nf7-s) new ram (pc3200 above) and having ur mx gfx card really doesnt matter, for o/cing ur cpu, but it'll be good to have a good one, u can pick up and 9500pro quiet cheap now...
if u dont want to spend money to get new mobo, then go for a cheap 1700+ from newegg.com, and not a expensive one from excaliber. those r very good for ur mobo, and u can prob get to 1.8-2.0ghz? i dont know.
but if u wanna keep mobo and get pc2700 crucial ram, newegg.com 1700+ tbreb-b, and thats about it. otherwise go for NEW SYSTEM :D

I think the things you might need to change would be the power supply, and the motherboard. With the PSU, try to get a good one such as Enermax, Antec, Sparkle, etc. Avoid the no name ones!!! A brand name Psu at 350watts is alot better than a 450W "came with the case" quality. But if you find a 450W no name brand for like $1 on www.pricewatch.com, go for it ;) Be sure to check out www.reasellerratings.com first. ;)
As for your RAM id keep it. I have 256 generic crappy pc2100 too and i hit 345fsb the other day. it just needs like 2.8 vdimm.
With the motherboard, definatly upgrade if you want that tbred to run good. I highly recommend Abit boards. They have some troubles with power, my -12v rail is at 7. BUt, they still run really good. with Abit, not only are they really good boards in my opinion, but they are cheap for all the stuff/features they have.
well, good luck with o/cing but with that memory, i wouldnt even bother. only if you have money to spend, or planned to upgrade.
Just the other day I did some modding lapped my NB, gpu core, pus some sink's on my vcard. Well after installing my system back in my case I thought I would try my smart fan I had sitting in a box brand new never used so I did. With the smart fan my temp's get up to about 47-49c full load after about an hour I switch back to my tornada temps where normal after I switch back around 40-42c so yea the smart fan put's out some cfm but if you are going for temp then get a tornada and be done with it enjoy the good sleep. :D

I thought I could get away without changing motherboards ... too bad.
I'll start shopping around for a MB going with the models you all suggested.

I put down an order for the following items :
1700+ T-BRED (JIUHB:0310XPMW)
PSU Antec SmartBlue 350w
SLK-800U
I'll be picking up a HSF soon ( vantec tornado or thermaltake smart case fan 2 ).
In 2-3 months, I should be able get a new MB and some good DDR to really get best results.
For the meantime, what kind of OC results can I expect give or take ?
Here is a place in Montreal where you can buy a PSU.
Where are you?

I live in Laval. I bought my latest system from them about 1 year ago. They have good prices.
I was thinking of buying my PSU from them but figured I would buy all my stuff online thru the same dealer where I am picking up my CPU. I will probably end up picking up my DDR and MB from them this summer.
I just bought a 1800+ from them last week.
a JIUHB 0311 for 80 canadian.
I bought a 1700+ JIUHB 0310 two weeks ago but they do not sell 1700's any more. They have good steppings.
The 1700= JIUHB 0310 will run a 2260 MHz.
