Hi,

Just got a new AMD 1.2GHz with an Abit KT7 board and I can overclock it in the bios without doing anything to the chip. Should that be possible? I thought it was necessary to modify something on the chip?

Only asking because I can't help wondering if I really have a 1.2 chip, or if it was already overclocked before I got it.

Thanks for any advice...

From what i've heard, 1.2 do not need any mods to them to overclock. The L1 bridges are probably all connected.

If it looks like the L1 bridges are connected by anything other than AMD(pencil marks or discoloration), then its probably been used before, but it should be new if you bought it that way.

One way to check if you've got the AMD 1.2 GHz or not is easy. Just look at the center of the CPU (core) and see the number and codes engraved onto the core. The code should start with something like this
AMD
A1200......
.....
and so on. That number 1200 indicated the 1200 MHz speed of the processor. I got my 1.2GHz oem version and it was "unlocked" as well. All the L1 bridges were connected so I didn't had to do anything on the chip itself.

Another way you can check for the originallity of the chip is to put it on the motherboard without changing any settings on the mobo and boot the system. It will display the original speed on the BIOS startup page.

Thanks!

What temperature is yours running at? Mine is always around 50 degrees C. Sometimes 47, sometimes 53.

When I OC to 1.3 the temp goes up closer to 60.

What ya think?

Mine is running stable at 45 C at full load and 39 C at idle. I'm using Hedgehog HS and YS-Tech fan (switched from delta 38cfm fan cuz of the annoying noise) I've heard MC 371 and MC 462 both from Swiftech rocks. You can find them at www.swiftnets.com to order online. You may have to wait for couple weeks though.
Oh yea, don't forget to use either artic silver or ultra silver for optimized cooling. Ultrasilver preferably.
Anyways, good luck.

Badboy, you cannot overlook case cooling. No matter what HSF you put in an air-cooled system..it will underperform without well thought out and executed case cooling. I get more of a measure drop in CPU temps. from a case cooling mod than from a different CPU cooler.(as long as I am using one of the top coolers on the market)

Cheers..

this is not entirly true the fan on my swiftech is a high out put 80`mm beast not to loud (at least not as loud as the fan on my hog delta black label) what i did to eliminate the case fan`s was to put a direct exsaust port right off the hsf through the side of my case.... once the heat from my cpu no longer was entering my case the temp droped a great deal cpu full load 37C system temp19-21 C ;D

Ok, I have to make a confession... Promise not to laugh. I've set up my computer on the floor under my desk. I don't know what I was thinking of, because the back of the case is adjacent to the radiator.... which means it has been sucking in warm/hot air!!!!

I guess that explains why I'm seeing higher temp than you guys... Ok, I've got to find another place for my PC.

Meanwhile, I like the sound of case cooling... can you recomend a good solution? Perhaps point me to a product.

I have to say a big thank you for all the help guys!!
