My parents have wanted to get my lil 6 year old brother a computer of his own, so he doesn't mess with thier crap, so while touring a few garage sales today I picked up a gateway 2000 computer... the whole shabang for $10. Its no power house but for $10, hey, what do you get for that these days.

Specs:

P1 166 (not sure if MMX or not, will check later).
48MB of EDO ram
3.2GB HDD
Onboard vid, sound, lan, 56k modem.

Now anyway, to my point, I have an AMD K6 200 here doing nothing, I wonder if it would be much better than the Pentium 166?

Which should I use in the system?

i think the 166 would be far more stable, and maybe faster

Just checked, the 166 is a non MMX, so the K6 is so I popped it in, BTW, the k6 is modded, the heat spreader removed. It boots up fine, although the BIOS still reports P1 166, but windows reports it correctly, as far as I can see the board has no jumpers anywhere, so the bios must be set for the 166 I assume.

I think the K-6 would be a littler faster because of the Pentiums lack of MMX, and I think MHz per MHz the k-6 is faster, could be wrong though. BTW is it the ceremic ones or the mylar ones?

EDIT:

Here (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/19970406/amdk6-05.html) are some benchys, looks to be about 33Mhz faster than a MMX Pentium.

If it were a P Pro it'd be clear cut, unfortunatly it's just a pentium ;)

Here's my question, Is moeny really that much of an issue? I really hope not. You can run and get a Pentium 233mmx for $10...

Here's my suggestion. Either run out and get a K6-2 500 for $20, or find an old Abit BX or BH motherboard and get one of the very few PII-450's for $20.

I hath spoken. ;)

Why so contricted to a P 166 or a K6-200?

Because they are what I had on hand, and when $20 means you are able to pay your bills or not it does matter. Besides, the K6 is now running happily at 250Mhz without spending a dime. It runs windows fine and allows my little brother to do what he needs.... nuff said, I did my part.
