Hi, Yesterday while putting on my Global Win FOP38 heatsink, i chipped off the corner of my Duron 800 processor. I turned the system on, not knowing, then it turned on, displayed sum weird stuff on the screen and I turned it off. I then tryed turning it on again. This time it didn't show ANYTHING. I figured I screwed up somewhere. So I pulled off the heatsink, burnt my fingers on the super super hot processor and saw the corner of the die was broken. This all happened because I had to redo my Pencil Marks.
Did I fry my motherboard in this MAJOR screwup? If I fried the board, is there any warrenty that will get me a new one? Also, I am pretty sure my Duron dosn't have a warrenty against this type of screwup. I am going to buy a new one tomorow I think. Should I stick it in the board? Also, what about my RAM. Is it fried?
Abit KT7-Raid
PC133 256 Megs
Everything else in the system worked OKAY when I transfered the parts to another computer.
Thanks in advance for the replys.

It seems to me like you fried your Duron. Try putting another processor and see if it works.
Motherboards don't break that easily.
Good luck.

I guess your components are ok, except for the fried cpu of course. If your cpu was very hot when you removed the hs I guess you didnt mount it properly. I mean chances are that heat killed your cpu, not the corner flip. Have you tried to mount your hs carefully and check if it will boot? (very long shoot ).
Hi,
Sorry I dont know what type of cooler youve got, but my advice is to get an Golden Orb Type cooler, mainly because there quiet, and very very very easy to install, as the spring clip holding mechanisam is not so tightly sprung that you need eight pairs of hands to be able to affix it. which is the reason ( I presume ) why your CPU is damaged.
Also there a few cheaper coolers out there which place to much stress on the DIE itself ( crush !! ) these are usualy the ones that are Cel / Dur / S7 jack of all trades !!
as for the MB, shouldnt worry to much, as they are quite resiliant , as you can see by all the OCing thats going on . and the ABIT board is a very good quality board.
RIP Duron 1 now go for it Duron 2 .
Paul.
do not buy a gold orb this hsf is designed for intell not to mention it`s a ****y hsf which i think thermaltake stand`s for ;D
the hsf that you have is a fairly good one... when installing a hsf take the mother board out of the case and lay it on the buble wrap that it came with and be patint and thorough most hsf spring`s are designed with the arc off center some of which can be installed backward`s be carfull to insure that it is on the right way ;D

Hi, Thanx for all the replys. I got a NEW Thunderbird 850mhz chip. Motherboard works fine.
As for the OLD Duron chip, It met a chisel, a hammer, and a torch today :) I got to see what the inside of it looked like. The silicon stuff looks pretty cool. I never acually found the "circuit" part of the die though... it must be pretty small.
Thanx again
what should I expect temperature wise on my new Thunderbird 850mhz? Global Win FOP38 with the red wire on 5v insteada the 12v. :)
Thanx

If you have good case cooling I'd expect between 40-45C with that - no case cooling and it'd probably be closer to 50C. My PAL6035 does nothing with my case fans switched off on my tbird - shoots up to 58C then crashes. Switch on the fans and it holds at about 45C. Case cooling matters :-)
why are you crippling your fop38? running the fan at a lower voltage really defeats the point of having the fop38 in the first place... i think you'll see a drop in temps if you run it how it was meant to be run...
