It's a part that lets you connect the tube together and then put a clamp around th tube.

Take a look at a picture of a pump on the inlet and outlet. It's not a thread but it's like equivalent of a male connector to connect to a tube.

That's an NPT barb. What makes it a barb is the tapered part on the right for slipping flexible tubing over.
