I have been doing some monitor research, in preparation for putting a new system together, and am trying to work in a cheap but nice 19inch Flatscreen CRT. While Sharky's guide reccomends the Samsung 955DF, I have read about quite a few people having problems with them ranging from monitor distortion to all kinds of things. In particular they have a lot of convergence problems. I haven't heard anything bad about the Viewsonic E90FB however, though it is about 20 bucks more. And it uses the PerfectFlat method, which is essentially a modified version of trinitron, not quite as good though. Since I am a big Trinitron fan, that is definately appealing. Anyone here have experience with these 19inch flat screen CRTs, or others you might reccomend?

Since you like Trinitron, why not just get one of those? It doesn't have to be explicitly a Sony. Dell and many other OEMs use Trinitron monitors as well (look for the P992 if you get a Dell).

The Classic reason of course, I am cheap:) The Viewsonic I can get for 220 or so, that is including all tax and shipping, about 195 for the Samsung. I don't want to spend any more than that.

My Samsung Syncmaster has never let me down. However I do not have the dynaflat model so not sure how flat it is exactly..

Take a look at that Philips 109B43.
• Flat shadow mask tube
• 18-inch viewing area and .25mm dot pitch
• 1600 by 1200 maximum resolution at 70-Hz refresh rate
• 91-Hz maximum refresh rate at 1280 by 1024 resolution. Prices do variy so look around. $(220-260)

The Samsung Dynaflat has a flat screen, but tube and lens inside is convex.

The higher-level model Samsung monitor, the Natural-Flat (Which has been discontinued from what I have heard), has both, as well as using a Diamondtron Tube. However, it is quite a bit more expensive still.

With the Dynaflat, there are many distortion problems in some of the monitors, but others are of very good quality and picture. My older 900IFT has a Dynaflat tube, and it does have a very slight curvature at the top, but it does not bother me, and since it was very slight, I was able to hide it somewhat with the screen settings, and overall, after more than 2 years, it is very nice to look at.

I suggest, that if you are to buy one of these, that you buy it locally, and if the monitor you have has the problems, exchange it, (Although I can't imagine that it would be fun lugging a 50 lb monitor back and forth :p )

My recomendation would be a Samsung 9xxMB series -- those are new models and really sweet. I've steered a bunch of ppl to them and they've all been extremely pleased.

Check out PCWorld for some reviews and some decent pricing -- Yeah i know its PCWorld -- but i've bought several monitors they have recommended and I've been happy with all of them.

Good luck let us know what ya end up with.

Think I am going to go with the G90FB, I can get a great deal, and I know people with them and they rock. As for the Samsung 9xxMB, I am sure they are nice but they are conventional, not flat. After having a flat screen I can never go back:)

The ones I saw were definitely flat and I think Samsungs site has them listed as Flat too.

But I do agree the G90 is a nice monitor as well -- ya can't go wrong with it either.

Congrats on the nice purchase.

I would get the cheapest sony crt. as long as it is a sony it is the best. NEC uses sony, but they call it something different.

PCWolrd just made a review of the top 19" monitors. The G90F (no 'b') is 3rd. A phillips for $150 is second. Would this be worth buying?

Well, keep in mind that their reviews take price into account, which is the best for the buck, not which is the best. As for the G90fb, I just returned mine. the screen dipped a bit at top, and a bit more in the bottom left, so both sides had curves, and I couldn't get straight lines, a convergence issue perhaps. I am going to spring for a sony CPD 440, screw this other stuff, I am getting a Trinitron. I am going to be staring at this thing for years, it is worth the money to treat my eyes right.

I have the Samsumg SM955DF and i Love it. I am looking real close right now and cannot see any curves at the sides. Looks great when watching a movie or playing a game.

Dell usually runs a discount sale where they discount their monitors 10% with free shipping. That's when I bought my g-90fb for 217.
They usually run it every 2 or 3 weeks, maybe they'll have one this weekend.
