Hey guys, I need your help in pursuading my school to get folding. I can get about 40ghz of p4 folding + another 15ghz of p3, so that would hopefully greatly add to the production of team 32 :) .

They are worried about security mainly, and that it would be too much work to administer for them, and so not worth while. The system uses Novell Netware - would a service install still work on that? Any advice, counter points or pointers would be greatly appreciated :D .

The service install only works on 2000/XP systems. Novell netware is not an operating system. Which operating system are the computers running on?

As long as the PCs themselves run 2k or NT or XP you should be fine. Novell will just be what the servers run.

As for security, they only upload completed work units, and download WUs and cores. Traffic isnt heavy or constant. No sensitive data is uploaded.

Also you may have more work to do if the proxy blocks port 8080. This port is needed to download and upload WUs. If it does block this port you will need to download HTTP Tunnel.

That's only when doing Gromax Tinkers use port 80

Really? I thought the program used port 8080 in general no matter which type of protein.

I believe you can use .msi packages in Netware as the Active Directory is a rip off of Novell in the first place. If not, there are a number of batch files that should do the trick as well.

There are some great security write-ups at the Stanfords site.

Print this section, or have the admin go read it:

http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq.html#misc.security

The summary is that the client uses 2048bit signatures (mega encryption) for data going to and from the client to Stanford. Furthermore, if Stanford University can run the client on their own machines, your school can (and should) as well.

Good luck,
Wedo

There is a service install for 98 and ME machines, but it requires changes to the registry. Go here (http://folding.octeams.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=13&categories=Running+as+a+service+in+Win98%2FME&parent_id=7) for more details.
Novell Netware is an operating system, but a specialized kind. It is a Network Operating System (NOS) mainly designed for use in large high-performance networks. There is not a Novell version of F@H that I am aware of.

Go here (http://folding.stanford.edu/serverstat.html) to see that F@H uses both ports 80 and 8080.
