quick question, most people here are using either goop or silicone to seal the front portion of the danner mag drive pumps against leaking.

My question is, if you used goop to seal the front, wouldn't it be difficult to open later on, as (marine) goop is also an adhesive?

Thanks

Yes, it would be quite difficult to remove it, as part of the glued surface is on a flange up inside, and quite impossible to cut the adhesive away.
That's why I used blue form-a-gasket. It's a silicon gasket in a tube for automotive aplications. Works like a charm, and fairly easy to remove.
It also resists most any chemical you would put in a watersystem.

The rubber o-ring has worked fine for me over the last 3 months. :)

OMG! I THOUGHT that gap looked like a potential problem!

*Runs off to find some 'form-a-gasket'*

Thanks for the replies!

Now this form-a-gasket, this can be purchased at home depot?

I don't know about home depot specifically, but you can find it almost anyplace that has an automotive department, including the local car parts places (3 near me all have it).
You don't need a whole bunch, just a good film over the o-ring before puting the cover back on.
And yours may not even leak. I think they had a problem with it years ago, but maybe they're over it now. My pump is 4 in october, and did leak ever-so-slightly when it was new.

I am running a danner pump as well and haven't noticed any leaks.. Or should I be waiting for it to leak?

Sounds like some danner users have been experiencing leaks.. Should i bother sealing up my pump "just in case" even though i haven't had a leak yet?

Nah. I wouldn't really worry about it. When mine first started leaking was during the leak testing before installing it, and even then it was only a few drops forming around that front impeller housing.
It wouldn't hurt anything if you need the peace of mind, like I'd said, it's removable should you ever need to open it up.
But really, if it don't leak, no need to fix it. </twisted cliche>

Petroleum products cause rubber to swell, right? What if you were to put a little bit of motor oil on it and put the housing back on quickly? Might the rubber absorb the oil and swell ever so slightly? Just a thought.

Do we want to know how you discovered this? ;)

It actually IS a funny story. I had some Power steering fluid in my car because it was leaking VERY slowly. One dark night on my way to work I thought I could tell that it needed some, so I pulled over and put some in.... Did I mention it was dark.... SOmehow I managed to put it in the brake system. I decided to put the rest in the power steering and make it to work and worry about it later. Anyway, I asked a "car guy" at work weather it would be a problem and he said "I use them interchangably all the time." Well, after a little while I started having trouble with the brakes and when I took it in I told them the story. They took out some seals and showed them to me beside a normal one....It was big! We're talking 3 times the size of the normal one! Anyway, Midas wouldn't touch it and I had to take it to the dealer. It ended up costing almost $2000 to have all of the ruined parts replaced!

My danner leaked and I just took the cover off, wrapped the mating edge with teflon tape, and it's been fine ever since.

So teflon tape should work well, assuming i get it snug?

(I really don't want to be buying anything i am never gonna use again)
