a freind of mine just bought a house

and were going to need some net working stuff

where is a good place to buy 1000 nics / and cat-6e in bulk

2 a rack ( for like rack mount servers) it doesnt need to be enclosed just the cheap ones

or even one that moutns to the wall would be cool

3 a rack mount router that wont break the bank

some decent coax cable also ( for home entertainment)

diggrr i think it was you that had a realllly kick ass home networking job done ( i mean you did it)

any suggestions are appreshated

the battle plan is to wire the house and then phase in the 1000mb componets ( switch routers )

but anything else you can think of that would be cool to do will be taken into consideration since were going to be in there wireing anyway

You don't need to use cat 6 cable even for 1000mbit, you still only need to use cat5, you may aswell save yourself the money :)

*Question*

For the best results, use solid for wall jacks and patch panels

This is taken from that site. The only wall jacks/patch panels I've used require the 8 individual wires to be punched down into the connector slots. But it says solid cable would be better than stranded cable. I don't follow as to why it is better though. Anyone shed some light on this for me.

with stranded cable, each of the individual 8 wires is made up of many tiny strands of wire. this makes them more flexible and great for patch cables. Unfortunately, trying to punch down stranded cable is like trying jog in clogs . You can do it, but there are better ways to get the job done.

With solid cable, each of the 8 wires is made of solid copper (usually) wire. It's a little less flexible (but no so much that you'd know) and is much easier to punch down.

Regarding the 8 wires. Standard 10/100 Mbit ethernet only requires two pairs (green/white-green and orange/white-orange) to function. However 1000Mbit requires all 4 pairs of wires. Be sure to follow standard EIA/TIA 568A or 568B (pick one or the other) wiring diagrams when punching down to ensure compatibility.

Racks are expensive, as is pretty much anything that is rack-mounted. I'd look for closing offices or liquidation auctions.
You may want to look into Graybar Electric and Anicom for parts. You may be able to find things at online retailers like DataCom Warehouse. I know TechData sells this sort of stuff, but I don't know if they sell to individuals (i.e. I think they're a distribution company, not a retailer).

Man, those prices are too much, I pay $50 per 1000' (pull)box.
I picked up my 7' rack and patch panel from: Cable and Connector Technologies (http://www.callcct.com)

You could save yourself a lot of cash and run it in normal cases.. It's the rack mount that will bankrupt you. You could grab some cheap, sterdy shelving somewhere and use that instead of racks.

Otherwise, for a budget, you could get some empty rackmount server cases, or even cheap servers off ebay. You can also get rackmount kits for some tower cases, or plain shelves that you can sit the servers on.

Are you looking for a Cable/DSL router in rackmount form? I don't think you'll find one. The easiest thing to do is to get a rackmount gigabit switch, and a seperate 1-port Cable/DSL router (non-rackmount).

For small rackmounts, check music stores.

For bulk cat6 check computergeeks.com It is like 50 bucks for 1000 feet with 100 ends
