Yeah so I bought a new HSF for my GeForce 4 Ti-4200. Pretty cool. Anywho I was taking the one off my ti-4200, but the thing is, the heat sink won't move! I dunno wtf is wrong, it's really stuck tight on there. Are there any tools I can use or maybe some sort of grease to take it off? Here's a pic to show you more in depth.

Hopefully that helps, all I need to do is take off that damn HS, and I'll be fine.
Thx for help in advance. ;)

People usually leave the vid card in the freezer for a couple of hours then slowly twist it off. I suggest you put it in a ziplock bag so nothing can happen to it.
youll still have to change the connector or get an adapter for the new HSF and you will also need to cut the RAM sinks in half.
Welcome to the forums.
Its on tight because thermal epoxy was used(most likely) to hold it on. Try the freezer method suggested by trdsw20. BE CAREFUL when you twist(or pry if necessary) the old one off to avoid damage.

How long should i put it in the freezer?
and
and you will also need to cut the RAM sinks in half.
where are the ramsinks?
you could put it in the freezer
or you could put a credit card, and screw driver under it, wedge it a little bit, then put compressed air in there for a few seconds, it should make it cold, thenyou can wedge it out
*** edit
if you want to go the freezer route make sure its all frozen, id wait like i dunno 12 hours jsut to be safe, then before you use the vid card, make sure its all completely unfrozen, id wait like 12+ hours just to be safe

You got the GF4 Thermal take HS I assumed you got the kit that comes with RAM sinks.
ramsinks are smaller heatsinks, that fit over ram modules
to dissipate heat from the ram

Yeah...but why cut them in half? Also, I put these ramsinks on the (what looks like) 4 little mini-processors looking things?
...and another thing :p . You guys think maybe I should just, give it to a tech center at like a Fry's, and tell them to do it? Cause I've been asking around at my school about the freezer way, and I'm just a little scared I might break something...:D
yea you cut the ramsinks, if they are too big
about the fry's , its your call

I dont think frys would do it. You might be a little timid to do it but you might want to just give it a try just be patient and dont pull too hard.

dont give it to frys
Ive heard scary stories about retail stores replacing vid card hsfs. You *might* find someone compitent if you are lucky- but for the most part, you are much, much better doin it yourself.

i dont mean to insult you intelligence, but their arent little plastic pins holding the hsf on is there? in the pic, it looks like their isnt, but i just had to ask. the screw driver and credit card method is usually pretty good. just get a flathead with a very small tip, and a piece of hard plastic. you put the plastic right next to the gpu, under the heatsink. then very slowly pry off the heatsink. the hard plastic is to protect the trace lines and any little capacitors that might be under where you are prying. it might take a little bit of force, but just go very slowy. good luck.
and welcome to the forums!

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I'm just gonna go with putting the credit card under the GPU and prying it off with the flathead. If it still is a little hard to do I will just freeze it a little bit, then try.
