I have installed the cpu (2100+) fine, but am really unsure about the heatsink. (all stock, retail box)
I assume you place the heatsink above the cpu, and then push down the metal clip, so it hooks on to each side of the socket.
the thing is, i clip one side, and then other side won't reach, and i have to push it down really hard, and im afraid i might break something!
Can someone explain to me how exactly to install it?
regards,
bob

you do need to apply some pressure to mount heatsinks with clips, a tight one is better than a loose one, and a good idea is to place some card or something over the pcb next to the socket, just incase to slip, to protect the traces and such.

The stock heatsink needs a lot of force to push on.. however if you do it the right way you won't chip your core.. Good luck if you didn't already get it.. :)

yeah when i did my stock one, (im happy to say, a long time ago) i had to put so much pressure on it, but good job i had a friend near by who knew alot more then me at the time, so its all good.
just make sure the HS is flat on the cpu when u apply the pressure on it, then it should be fine

Probably not - how much grease did they put on exactly???? The stuff virtually COVERS the whole package!
I recently took my HSF (stock) off in a (vain) effort to reduce temps by replacing the thermal gack with proper compound - the HS required a fair bit of force to put it back on, but my CPU seems fine, if still toasty.
I was just wondering if that is true, I put my own on.

It is true. AMD recommends thermal pads over paste :p And they put a very small drip of paste only, if you listened to the voice it warned you not to put too much when the CPU with paste covered all over was shown :)
From ever test I've ever conducted in the technobowel labs (back when the site was up), I found that the thermal grease actually worked better than the thermal pad especially when the Hs/f had been removed and then put back on. RIght now on my personal Barton 2500+ rig the temp isn't too good. It fluxuates from 36c to 44c when I'm watching it in the bios (god knows what it does when I'm playing UT2K3). I think I'm gonna save up and buy a really good Water cooling kit.

That's right. That's why AMD recommends grease if the CPU is removed every now and then..
I think it's worth it to remove it once every month or so and use thermal grease. The pad just doesn't conduct heat enough in my opinion.
