View Full Version : Artic Silver on AMD CPU

I "accidentally" spilled the artic silver over my AMD 1.2. I tried to get it off with clean cloth and stuff but it won't just come off. The core part(metal part) is clean but the artic silver "mess" is all over my cpu now. I was wondering, are those artic silver conductive? I'm just assuming that it contains silver...so it should be conductive right?
If it is...then I'm in BIG TROUBLE. It's touching those small chips and bridges on the CPU.
Could anyone tell me that the artic silver is whether conductive(electricity) or not?

Thanks.

Arctic Silver is slightly capacitive...have you tried rubbing alcohol to gt it off the chip?

Nail polish remover works just as well. And I now know that I should squirt the Arctic Silver onto another surface, then spread it to my cpu.

I find one of those erasers on the tip of a pencil works wonders - the arctic silver comes off straight away. I dunno how happy most people would be about rubbing an eraser over their cpu, but it hasn't hurt mine - try it at your own risk!

I fried my old t-bird 800 using a deadly combo. a Copper shim, artic silver and the pencil trick.

how much of the AS should i use? if it is conductive should it only touch the core or doesn't it matter as long as it doesn't touch any bridges?

A thin layer on the CPU core only :)

And when he says thin, he really means THIN, very, very, very THIN. Start with the smallest ammount possible. I spread mine on with the flat side of an X-acto knife. It is far easier to apply more than it is to take that stuff off.

if your going to use arctic silver then use just a little ...if you use ultra silver then use all you want ;D

Thanks people,
I tried to get the AS off with the rubbing alcohol but it left me a little bit of residue. I erased it totally with pencil eraser like Rob said. Eraser works.

Thanks again...my 1.2 T-Bird is back on. :):):):):)
