View Full Version : So who wants to recruit me?

It's late, and I was thinking what a waste my new Barton 2500+ (@ 12.5x172 until I get my TwinMOS CH5 this week) is during all those sleeping hours... So I thought that maybe I'd try folding. And what better place than the Overclockers forums?? ^_^

Now the only thing is... Which subteam wants me the most? I was thinking perhaps I'd join up with the ninjas but I wanted to give everyone a fair shot at me... :D

Btw, one of your responsibilities in assimilating my box(es) will be to educate me in the ways of folding.. I've been reading a lot of the stickies, but damn, there's a lot of information there.. Still don't know which client I'm supposed to use.. :p

I don't know if you're a gamer, but OC3d is always open to new members. We're all members of overclockers.com's 3dmark team as well as folding fanatics. OC3d is 32's first subteam and has been folding just a little more than a year.

Check us out here (http://www.oc3d.web1000.com//)

Nice... You've got me interested.

Yes, I'm a gamer, but I don't think I can afford to replace my GF4 Ti4600 any time soon... And without a Radeon9800, my 3D scores suffer... :(

Well, our 3dmark team (http://oc3dmark.octeams.com/) is setup so that members can compete with people who have similar hardware. Virtually all video card types are represented.

As for folding, I'd recommend getting the console text-only version. Just stick it in its own little folder somewhere.

First of all, create a shortcut to it.
Then right-click and edit the properties of the shortcut.

There's a target line that lists the directory path to where the folding@home .exe is stored on your system.

example: C:/Program Files/folding/folding@home.exe

You want to edit that line a little bit, like so:

example: C:/Program Files/folding/folding@home.exe -advmethods -forceasm

This will tell the folding program that you have a fearsome, no-nonsense, protein-crunching CPU and will force it to give you only the best work units. You'll get points faster this way. And you'll hear other folders refering to this tactic as "folding Gromacs".

Now run it from the modified shortcut you made and it'll let you set your name and team and some other options. I may have missed one or two, but for the most part you can follow what I listed below. If in doubt, go with the default option by just pressing <enter>.

name: <you decide what name goes here>
Team #: 32
ask net? no
use IE settings? no
change advanced options? yes
core preference? fah
priority? idle
cpu useage requested? 100
disable highly optimized code? no
machine ID? 1
ignore time-out? no

It'll run in a DOS window on your desktop. If that bothers you, there are a couple of ways to make it disappear into the background that I could help you with...

But before you go about hiding the console, you're probably going to want a way to keep track of what its doing.

So head over to www.em-dc.com and download Electron Microscope 3. You may want to download the overclockers.com EM3 skins while you're there.

This program is pretty easy to setup. All you've got to do is run it and click the button in the top left corner. This lets you get to its setup. You point it to where your folding.exe is and click "add a box". You can fill out a name for your box, CPU info, change the colors of the progress bars, change the skin for the program, set it to display your points, keep track of the work units you've done, generate reports, make EM3 transperant.... Well, there's a lot to play with and it should be pretty easy to get the hang of.

If you have several boxes networked together, you can monitor all of them from EM3. All that's required is that the folding@homes on the other boxes are in a network-shared directory or hard drive. You add them to EM3 the same way you added the first.

Looks like i've been beaten to it by Arkaine23 (Stupid timezones working against me again ;) ) but i'll pitch for my sub-team, [OC]FoldingNinjas.

We have only had the team for a few weeks and have had terrific progress. We would really like a bit more power so we can compete in a sub-team gauntlet (a race to a certain number of points). Of course you're welcome to join.

To be honest I don't really mind who you fold for, the fact that you are folding is excellent news, but if you would like to join a team..... NINJA! :D

Current ninja folders include (among others) me, asj, srimmer (new name ?), nerdlogic, Zoilo (in spirit), David (a senior penguininja).

Come up with a ninja rank for yourself and feel free to join in the madness.

Gotta agree with that, as long as you're folding for Team 32.

Its really easy to switch usernames for folding. Just open the client.cfg file with notepad and you can change the username. Then you just close folding with a CTRL + C and restart it. So if you wanna fold for awhile with your own name or with a few different subteams, go right ahead.

OC3d is at the top of the charts and fighting to stay there, while the [OC]FoldingNinjas only recently were formed and are at the beginning of a meteoric rise in the ranks.

I fold for subteam: For_Those_We_Lost because I want to dedicate my participation to those I lost to cancer. Anyway, as earlier mentioned, it's not really who you fold for, it's that you fold.

Also remember that whether you fold for a subteam or your self, you can get plenty of support from this forum. If you have any questions, all you have to do is ask. Were a pretty informal group around here, so feel free to speak up.

GO NINJAS!!!
Using notepad to change the client.cfg file has never worked for me for some reason, so I use a shortcut called FAH config which has the -config flag set in the target (the same way the -advmethods and -forceasm flags are set) so I can change anything when needed using that shortcut. Of course, when you change anything you'll need to stop the client first.

Well, I am one of the [OC]FoldingNinjas and the only girl on the team and I don't know if any other girls fold here! Anywho, if you want to join us, you can come up with a name for yourself, or have one of us give it to you. Like my name, HotNinja, given by user Nothelagak. Then again, I've also been called the Biting Ninja as seen on Zoilo's avatar. As you can see on my avatar, I need no mask... bwwwaaahahahaa... I am awesome and kick butt without it. ;)

Well, we would be glad to have you going our subteam, TeamDFA. Just a little history about us, I was introduced to Folding by Bscruggs_DFA (OCn00b). I started folding as OC-overkill and a bunch of us (members of an online gaming clan) started folding. Then one day I thought, "Hey why not combine our folding powers so we can give OC3d, Wedo, etc a challenge?" We recruited some friends of our (not from our clan) and they started to help us also. Our subteam formed after [OC]FoldingNinjas, but we quickly passed them in terms of overall score and production :D. Anyways, we'd be glad if you joined us and help us give the "Big Boys" some stiff sompetition. But whoever you decide to join, its all good, cause you'll be helping Team 32 and helping us get closer to finding a cure for some diseases. Welcome to Team 32.....

Ok... I'm working on my first WU, and it looks like I've got console up and running with the proper options enabled. Now here's a question... What do I put as my "name"? Do I use my alias, or the subteam name? And if I do use the subteam name, where does my alias ever show up in the stats?? And do I have to create an account or something on the official Folding website?

Another question.. If I set this up as a service, will I be able to set the run time to always and priority to "idle", like the regular console version? I mean, I want to fold as much possible, but I don't want to lose frames in any game I play either.. ;) I'm currently reading the Borging thread, so I think I'll be ok with this...

Oi... Almost good to go. Soon I'll be folding 24/7~! :D

One more thing... I've got a gromac core, so that's good. But it seems to be taking a long time for frames to complete... I'm crunching the p340gnra_nat protein, and each frame seems to be taking about 11-12 minutes or so on a Barton2500+ @ 3000+. Is this normal? SSE is on, and more info can be supplied if necessary.

The Name should be the name of the subteam like TeamDFA. If you do decide to join a subteam, your alias will not show up in the stats. Atleast I dont know how. Yeah, gromac 340s do take awhile to fold. Welcome to Team 32 no matter which subteam you decide to join.

Subteams are basically seen by stanford as other users... It's just that many different people fold for that username.

that seems about right though you could probly squeeze a bit more performance from it if you started cutting out junk running in the backbground assuming you haven't done so already

Pick any name you want or choose the name of one of the subteams. If you fold with a subteam, you'll never be able to see anything in the way of your personal contribution to the stats. That's something you give up by joining a subteam. If you choose your own name, you will get to see your own stats on STanford and there's no need to register anything. Ass sone as work is turned in and they have a chance to update their database, the points will be credited to whatever username you're using.

EM3 is great if you're on a subteam, because it keeps its own record of the work that you've personally done for that subteam.
