I'm new to AMD processors...
what's the difference between Athlon and T-Bird?
can the 750MhZ T-Brid I'm getting do DDR ram at 133? or just 100? or not at all?
Gigabyte MOBO GA-7ZX
VIA KX-133 chipset
you tell me...
muchos gracias

goofy
i KNOW its the fastest thing going
(that's why i'm getting it)
i just wanted to know what makes it differ from
the Athalon/Atholon/Athlon
ddr ram support?
cache?
what's the difference?
(sweet results by the way)

Well an Athlon almost same as Tbird have 512k L2 Cache (SLOT VERSION) whlie Tbirds have 256k L2 Cache(Socket Version) I've heard of some cases where athlons (SLOT VERSION) having half speed L2 Cache but I could be wrong. Well that's one of the differences.
well a tbird is an athlon actually. you could say it's a newer version of the athlon with half the 2nd level cash...eh..cache but at full processor speed. the old 2nd level caches ran at half or even less of processor speed. the duron is like the tbird but it only has 64kb 2nd level cache instead of 256kb.
there are slot a versions of the tbird but they're really rare. no socket a for old athlon.
i hope i helped a bit.
sorry i forgot about the ddr.
you can't use ddr on an old athlon. you need a board with the amd 761 chipset (correct me if i'm wrong :) ). it's only availible for socket a(i mean the chipset). right now ddr seems pretty expensive, idon't really know the gap between drr and mushkin cas2 but mushkin is supposed to be the fastest dimms out there. btw there much cheaper than ddr.

Crucial at least are pricing their DDR memory exactly the same as their PC133 - overclockers.co.uk list PC1600 CAS2 128MB and 256MB for exactly the same price (to the penny) as PC133 CAS2 128MB and 256MB sticks. Dunno about PC2100, have to wait and see. The motherboards are more expensive though.

do you mean can the T-Birds use a FSB of 133? The new ones officially support it, but the old T-Birds should be able to do it as well, as long as you have a motherboard that supports it. As far as I know the Slot Athlons (no such thing as Anotholon Atholon Atholuonos-Maximus Athlonimus-Prime etc. etc. ;-) ) can use the 133 FSB though that may be because no slot A motherboard supports it... The AMD 760 chipset supports DDR RAM and a 133 FSB (I think).

Slotted Athlon have 512 kb of L2 cache running at 1/2 of the processor speed and their aren't any chipset anywhere that I know of that will support DDR memory. The Thunderbirds are socket ver. of Athlon with 256 kb of L2 cache running at full processor speed. The Duron is a socket Athlon with 64 kb of L2 cache running at full processor speed. both the Thunderbird's and Duron's run on the same chipsets so both should support DDR memory.

i'll be getting the Gigabyte MOBO GA-7ZX
VIA KX-133 chipset
it's in the mail already...i hope the support DDR i'd LIKE to deck out this comp. (get a 1.2 instead of the 750 it comes with...eventually)
but if there isn't TOO much of a diffference between DDR and PC 133 SDRAM i don't know...well whatever.
thanks

Isnt the KX-133 chipset for SLOT A? If it is you aren't getting a Thunderbird you are getting an Athlon Classic, which will probably NEVER support DDR RAM.
If you were to get a KT133 or KT133A based motherboard and a SOCKET A Athlon (aka Thunderbird) then you could buy a DDR motherboard later when they become more easily available and DDR RAM prices drop (if they drop) and still use the same CPU. Plus the fact that Durons stomp Athlon Classics, why would you buy an Athlon Classic?

Well...it was an e*bay auction
(I'm told the price was a little high..)
but anyways check it out for yourself
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1213611104
it says that specific chipset and mother...and even a picture.
it'd better be a SLOT A so he me god or I'll have to cause physical harm to someone. }>

i meant it had better be SOCKET A
(ugh)

well the picture is of a Socket A motherboard.... I looked into it and the KX133 chipset is SLOT A ONLY. However I found this on the Gigabyte homepage http://www4.gigabyte.com.tw/products/pro_new2.htm The guy just made a mistake in the add I think as it says this motherboard uses the KT133 chipset. It'd be better if it were KT133A, but much better than a KX133 :)

and the guy also threw in a 256mb of pc133.......
unfortunetly i fried the cpu lol
but I traded him my two old sticks of 128mb pc100 for 1 new stick of 256mb pc133
