I recently put a Duron 600 on an Asus A7V. I formatted my hard drive, and bought a GeForce 2 MX to go along with it. (upgraded from a Voodoo 3 2000) I unlocked the CPU with the pencil trick and have had no problem getting it up to 800 with temps at 43C. However, trying to make it stable, I still have it at 600 with temps around 36-38C. I'm using a GlobalWin FOP-32. I have a case fan in the bottom, front of the case sucking, and one on the rear top, exhausting. Now, my question is this. Why won't this machine run for longer than an hour without locking up? It especially seems to lock up ANY time that I try to put a graphics load on it..ie. Everquest, or anything else that runs graphics, like FLASH on a website. Locks it up every time. It reboots to windows 98 with no problem, but it will lock up everytime. The longest it has gone without locking up is about 2 hours. In a nut shell, how do i get it to NOT lock up? Any miracles would be greatly appreciated.
Frustrated,
Lance

How big is your power supply? Most of the problems I encounted were related to that... It is generally agreed upon that you need at least a 300-watter. If this is not the case, your ram may be suspect, but It doesn't look like you're messing with the FSB. What voltage are you running that CPU at? I couldn't get my 650 past 800 without increasing the voltage, perhaps you should try this. It may also be that the duron that you've got just isn't that overclockable(I doubt thats it, though).

I'm running a 300W power supply. I have 2 sticks of RAM. One is a PNY 64meg chip, the other is an off brand 64meg chip. Would RAM cause the computer to lock up all of the time like it is doing? Like I said, it does it EVERY time i try to run graphics. I'm running 600 at 1.65 on the AUTO. I don't have it user defined. I'm letting it set it at whatever it wants to for right now.
Thanks for the help though. I might try to put a different stick of RAM into it. What is a good brand that is nice and stable? And no, i'm not messing with the FSB yet. I did recently goto JUMPER mode though. I had it in JUMPER FREE mode before. It went over 2 hours without locking up in JUMPER mode and I got so excited that I tried to launch some graphics and it locked up again. <sigh> back to the drawing board.

Looks like you have enough power for this system, I would go with some good quality memory. Match it if possible that will prevent timing issues. Also bump the core voltage a little at a time untill it becomes stable. 150+ over almost always requires more core voltage...

Yeah..... once you turn the voltage up from stock, you should be able to put a bit more into that chip. And definately get some more Ram. Cruical has a 256meg stick of cas2, pc133 for about $110 at their site right now, which is an unbeatable deal. Just search for this product number: CT32M64S4D7E. Good luck!
if you got the bucks go for mushkin cas2 rev3 ram. it's expensive but it's the best you can get out there. o/cable to 150mhz!!!!! if your system locks up at graphics i would say that the psu is too weak. although 300w should be enuff for the duron. i'm still waitng for my new psu with 450w (yeah!!). i hope this will solve my problem. i post if it works.

OK, thanks. I'll look into getting some new RAM. I brought my CPU back down to 600 to get it stable. Should I bump up the core voltage even though I'm still at 600?

Its hard for me to believe its the video card when the same thing was happening with my Voodoo 3, 2000. I put the new GeForce 2 MX in it to see what might happen. It got more stable, but still will not take graphics, or keep from locking up for more than about 2 hours. I'm starting to think I should erase the lead marks over the L1s, just to see if i can get it to stable out. Any feedback on this would be great.
