My next system is going to probably be an AMD T-bird, currently I have an Intel P3-700@994mhz FCPGA, but I'd like to know more about the AMD chips.
Why are AMD chips cheaper than Intel? is it because of the "name"? reputation of Intel?
As far as I know, AMD's run relatively faster, are cheaper, and perhaps just as, if not better at Overclocking. I figure that Intel prices would have dropped a lot more, now that AMD has shown its place in the Market.
Anyone got any ideas??

Probably because a lot of people are still buying Intel, people that just know Intel and don't do any real research (and probably wouldn't understand any of it even if they did), companies like Dell that only carry Intel, even people that build their own computers and have only built Intel systems in the past may want to stick with them (Last summer when I was reading up on the new processors I was a little leary of the AMD stuff because I had no idea how I'd do anything with a goldfinger, etc.) or people may have had an old AMD (which I've heard were not very good) and so don't want to go back, etc. Plus the fact that Intel now has the "fastest" CPUs, people that have enough money and don't know much about computers will be buying P4s. So I don't think Intel is that short of business and so they don't have to have the lowest prices.
AMD however is trying to gain market share and so they keep prices low in order to get more people running AMD systems (OEMs as well as individuals)
Just my thoughts, I haven't taken any economics courses or anything so I could very well be wrong...

Intel is a larger company. They need a larger return on their products to actually see a profit. AMD is a smaller company and can maneuver on less cash. Kind of like a Stretch Limo vs. a Porsche

Ya that seems to be a good concept, I guess maybe that's how AMD a small company can afford to offer lower prices due to their size.
Also, ReNeG@dE you may have gotten one of the key points as to why I didn't want to buy the AMD chips before my p3-700 system I have now, I rembered that I once had an AMD 486 DX-4 100, even overclocked to 120, it didn't match up the speed of my friend's Intel Dx-4 100. However, it did do much better than my Intel 486 DX 33.
It looks like Intel has been dominating the market place, but eventually AMD will soon too(Whether or not this is good for us, i.e. Prices for AMD may eventually be higher than Intel's). I know when AMD first released theie Athlons, they were priced higher than Intels, but the month later that changed.
I'll probably head out for AMD T-bird 1.1Ghz, its basically the system I need, although I will have to buy a 300Watt p/s & get a motherboard, probably Abit KT7A??, (I've been using my current mobo, Soyo 6ba+IV since I had my celeron 300A)
