I have a K6-2 500 and am looking for a new motherboard. Major aim is 3D games. Also have a GeForce2 MX. Any suggestions for the best motherboard, including value. The one I currently have has AGP version 1.0 only (not referring to X1, X2 and X4) yet my video card says it should be AGP version 2.0 compliant.

I have seen advertised a Gigabyte GA5AA which seemed good value but appears to only be version 1.0 compliant, and a Biostar M5VNB which is version 2.0 compliant.

Any ideas? And am I likely to get a performance boost by changing motherboards (currently have a Jetway 542B - I can pass that on to my daughter for my old K6-2 300 so it's not a waste even if the performance boost is only small).

Thanks for any comments.

Heres my suggestion:

Go to www.pricewatch.com, click on motherboard combo's. Scroll down to w/cpu+fan duron 600, pick up the fic AZ11 combo for $128 bucks. If your current system is an AT power supply, click on case power supply, click on 300W. Don't get a generic POS, go to page 2 and get the Enlight 300W ATX for $28.

If your adamant about extending the life of your k6-2, I recommend The FIC PA2013 (agp 2.0, 2megs pb cache). Make sure you download via's 4in1 driver set immediately with this board.

Good luck!

AT Format - Epox MVP3C2, DFI K6BV3+66, FIC VA-503+, Soyo 5EHM, or the Tyan S1590

ATX Format - Epox MVP3G2, MVP3G5, DFI K6XV3+66, Soyo SY-5EMA+, AOpen AX59 Pro

I recommend these motherboards as they are all able to support the K6-2+ and K6-III+ CPUs, which are the most powerful that will ever be available for the socket 7 platform. K6-2+ and K6-III+ CPUs use less power, have improved caches, and can be O/C'ed to 600 MHz+. There performance is significantly better than a K6-2 at any speed.
