if you can get it to run linux, and get linux to use the internet, then there should be no problem, right?

I heard you can do it, but isn't the xbox only like 300mhz?

isn't it a mix of a p3 and a celeron?

I believe it's officially a PIII but it has the same cache as a celeron, something like that.

Folding is'nt about points.
If you cant make a positive post then why post at all?

Folding is about finding a cure, and helping others. Not about how many points you have nor how many pc's.

Not trying to flame here, But i just hate when people waste forum space.

Yes its a 733mhz p3. Which is why id like to have it folding. when im not playing it, makes sense to have it do something useful.

Are Xboxes made to run 24/7?

That's a good point, I'm not sure x-box designers intended for kiddies to play weeks at a time :D.

If your concerned about running it 24/7, just watercool it. I saw one done on [H].

Well i can always mod a copper sink with fan.

But does anyone have any info on Folding?

Some people who really get into a game start it one day and dont stop for like 5 days until they finish it. Its got a fan to cool it so if that isnt enough, well....

I just found a site for PS2 linux and a folding@home on it. I wonder how slow the PS2 folds...

Here's the links.

I think I read somewhere that when folding on the PS/2, it uses the processor and the video processor to speed it up.

can you still play it after you do that to it?

if they can get the video processor to do some computing, then why can't they do it with the PC?

Not true.
You could run XP useing Virtual OS through linux.

well, you would still have to have linux in there. microsoft windows can't run by itself on its own device.

Now that I think about it, that may have been the Playstation 2. But it has something to do with the way the VPU was built - more like a central processor that for video.

That second link is to a folding project but it isnt for the Stanford Folding project. The stanford F@H consoles have to be downloaded here http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/download.html

You can only download clients directly from them, downloading a client from anywhere else would go against their rules. So you would need to get the PS2 or x-box to run the standard linux program.

Got a question though, where would F@H store the data used while folding, on the memory card?

On the PS2, it would use the 32megs of ram to work in, but I don't know about storage when the unit was powered down.

On the Xbox, it would use some of the hard-drive space.

you could do this but you COULD NOT PLAY GAMES ON IT unless you got another HDD for the nix install and swapped them out. You must first solder on a mod chip-this allows the xbox to boot of an os different from its normal lil os. You would be required to install nix instead of the standard xbox os-so if you ran it open and swaped drives alot it would work. The HDDs are 8 gig from either WD or (someone else, i wanna say maxtor).

The chip is a P3 with 128kb cache-not a celeron, there is a dif.

The HDD is primary and the DVD is secondary on single channel IDE. The DVD uses a propriatary power connector-the hdd is a standard ide drive using a molex.

Heat is an issue. The HDD is directly over the CPU and GPU.

As for the GPU it is a modification of the nForce northbridge with intergrated graphics. This system uses the HT bus. The integrated graphics are upgraded to run something on par to a gf3/ti500 with 64mb ram. The memory clock is 200mhz ddr. The fsb is 133. The core is coppermine. if using the xbox as a PC it is speculated that more ram could be added (there are solder pads for another 64mb). The controllers use USB and the controller outs could be used for a kb and mouse with proper drivers.

the only way to play AND run nix is to swap hdds.

For the PS2-linux kit it comes with a HD. The PS2 network adapter has a molex and what looks to be ide connection on it but an old WD drive I have didn't line up with it so I don't know what you can use.

If it uses the same voltages wouldn't you be able to just modify the connector?

I would guess so, I didn't really look, I was ready to play SoCom...hahaha! :D

Would this work on a game cube?

SpaceRangerJoe

as far as adding ram, it should definately be possible. i read that the developer version of the xbox had 128 ram, instead of 64 like the commercial version.
