Hey peeps, this thread is meant to gather the experiences of us serious gamers and overclockers in this community with lcds. Since 16ms response times its finaly possible, and some ppl even games at higher response times well...

Ok, now onto my review:

Hitachi CML174 Black

Quick monitor specs:

16ms response time
400:1 contrast ratio
17"
native resolution: 1280x1024
Analog & DVI-Inputs
zecsei black

Well dudes, i couldnt be happier with this monitor, even though i loved to game at 100fps in my old crt the eyestrain was starting to mess up my eyes... So this monitor does 60fps effectively (well, it really does 1000ms/16ms=62.5fps) and im glad to give out some fps for ABSOLUTELY ZERO EYESTRAIN. 400:1 contrast ratio ain't top of the line, but i can't tell any artifacting or messy dark colors, everything looks crisp to me. I should remind you im VERY picky with visual stuff.

To play at a native 1280x1024 resolution i must have a kinda good system, just look in sig.... Non native resolutions arent that good, 1280x960 is a little blurry, 640x480 is fine, 1024x768 is still bearable, but 800x600 sux utterly... I'm using DVI input right now, with 640x400 (DOS mode) the LCD applies a filter so it wont looked messed up. I must add that AA HELPS A LOT in non native resolutions, so crank it up if you wont get that much of a performance hit, GO ATI ;).

The drawback on this lcd is that analog mode SUX, image is washy, and with washy i mean ITS VERY ANOYING, yes i can work but reading through "waves" of sharp and unsharp letters sux... if you wont use dvi i wouldnt advise you to get this one.

Feel free to post your impressions of your lcd no matter if another user has it...

Ohh and heres our mantra, tag your sig!!!

Here's mine

Benq fp767 17" lcd.
500:1 contrast ratio
16 ms response time
260 cm/d brightness
$378 shipped from www.logicalplus.com does not iclude 30 mir.
pimping black color

Flat out this is just a sweet monitor. best bang for buck by far. No ghosting at all in games and the text looks clear even very small fonts. I'm using the dvi out on ti4400 with an adapter as this monitor does not have a dvi input. That is the only negative point on this monitor. native res is 1280*1024 but I use 1024*768 with no negative difference at all.

and mine, although it isn't a 16 ms response time monitor. planning on getting one though:

Viewsonic VG700 17" lcd
Contrast ratio: 450:1
Response time: 35 ms
Brightness: 260 cd/m
Viewing angle: 140 h, 135 v
Inputs: Analog
Color: Silver and Black
Integrated Speakers

Great looking monitor for anyone going for the silver/black theme. Decent for games, but expect a little ghosting. Looks best at native resolution (1280 x 1024), anything lower looks bad. Analog input only, but the quality is just as good anyway. I recommend using the dvi to analog converter, gives a little extra boost in performance and clarity.

Just had this monitor for a few hours now and it's amazing. The colors are unbelievably gorgeous, and the display has excellent viewing angles.

This monitor has a 25ms response time, and so I did notice some slight blurring in ut2003.

My DVD's have never been more beautiful. I can't see any blurring at all in them, and I my eyes seem to be able to notice blurring and other defects very easily.

The color is extremely uniform, I can't see any derivation in brightness on any part of the panel. No dead pixels. Color charts display very well and I am able to discern the difference between dark greens and red with fair ease.

I'm on digital hook-up, tried analog for a minute and hated it. Hope this helps.

Great to a sticky dedicated towards getting a database going on the various 17" LCD options as well as other sizes to.

After lots of reading and comparisons in stores I choose the BenQ FP767 in black, and I paid $509 canadian which is about $375 US (if we had the rebate up here it would equal about $340 US DAMN GOOD DEAL).

500:1 contrast
16 ms response
Brightness 260 cd/m2
Viewing Angle (H/V Degrees) 140/140
(Max.) 1280 x 1024 /75 hertz
Pixel Pitch (mm) 0.264
Power Consumption (Max.) 50W
Analog input

I run 1280x1024 and I really like this res, the LCD runs 1024x768 fine with a tiny decrease in sharpness but still very acceptable. I have not played withg other resolutions. Colour saturation once calibrated as you like suits me fine. Differentiation between dark greens and black when watching dvd's is decent as all LCD's have this challenge. Gaming is where the monitor does very well, I have seen no ghosting at all. I am using a dvi to analog adapter via my 9500 Pro.

I feel the monitor offers great value especially when in the US there was a 30 rebate offered on it as well.

There is also a promo going on right now on refurb units for those interested follow the link $339 US free shipping for the FP767

I go gaming at either a friends place or to a LAN party almost every weekend so portability is very important to me. I got the DELL 1800FP (http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/products/model_snp_monitor_1800fp.htm) because a friend was buying 4 of them at a great price through work.

I noticed it is not quite as sharp as my other CRTs but it sure is alot easier to lug around than a 21" CRT and at 18" CS and all my other MP games still look great.

IBM T560, 15 inch TFT

None of the essential info is listed on IBM's site (http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=-840&langId=-1&partNumber=6656HG2&storeId=1) but the monitor does pretty well.

I play games like NBA Live 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2K3, and does pretty well, only little ghosting. I love the design too, and with both DVI and RGB in, it comes in handy... although I've KVM'ed now.

I have two IBM T55As one black and one white :bang head: :D These screens were manufactured back in around 1998 and probably have a 300 ms response time but even FPS look okay to me and they are fairly bright with good contrast.

These IBMs are 15 inch and like every other damned 15 inch desktop LCD only do 1024 x 768. My Dell laptop comes with 15 inch that can do 1600 x 1200. It makes things look positivley huge on the IBMs. Why the HELL don't any manufactures make desktop models that do the same resolutions. I don't want to have to buy a fricken 20" screen to get high resolutions so I can see more than one page, or so i can use photoshop without needing dual monitors. A major selling point of LCDs are are that they are small.

Oh well, I should probably shut up now. But PUH-LEASE Hitachi, Samsung, NEC, Sony and anyone for that matter make an 15 inch--hell i'd be willing to comprimise--or 17 inch desktop LCD that does SXGA or UXGA! Perhapse with OLDEDs...

Because a laptop is very close to your eyes, so it's okay to set the resolution higher as you are already close to the display.

With retail LCDs, most monitors are about 24+ inches from the user's eyes, and 1600x1200 would be awefully hard to see on a 15" screen 24+ inches away.

That extra 6+ inches a laptop monitor is closer makes a big difference in viewing higher resolutions.

you know the specs... eveyone here seems to have one and love it. Basically im not going to say anything new, so im not really going to say anything at all. Its a great monitor at a great price. I havent gotten to use it much (new job, work 4 ten hour days, get about 2 hours of none work none sleep time per day which mostly goes into showering and eating and stuff like that) but i did play some UT2003 on it the other day and i didnt see any ghosting or anything. Overall just read what everyone else said, i agree 100%

Another Benq FP767B user here.

absolutely astounding in gaming. much more so than any CRT i've ever used.

There is absolutely no ghosting whatsoever with this on any of my games.

The ease on the eyes has been very noticeable. i can game for a few hours now without my eyes getting tired like they did on the CRT.

I don't have any flat panels to compare it with but its a winner in my books. after the rebate it will cost me 348.00.

my 3.6ghz rig with 9500pro @ 340/270 (ram is slowly dying i think :() can handle just about any game* with 6xAA and 16xAF at 1280x1024 which is the max res for this Benq monitor.

* the only game that i've had to lower my AA and AF was the new star trek game but i think that had more to do with it being a demo than anything. retail code was probly smoother. everything from BF1942 to UT2k3 and Chaser runs perfectly at max everything.

Just wanted to chime in. I ended up buying myself a Smsung 191T. It is fantastic for gaming. I can't believe the size and crispness of screen. Just amazing. On top of that, I don't see the ghosting in games to the degree of those that have issues with it. I certainly don't see it in the racing games, and the FPS seem great to me (UT2k3 tested so far)...needless to say, I love it and im pumped.

15:9 samsung 172w here,....

400:1 contrast ANSI (700:1 on the box sticker, they changed it)
450cd/m2 brightness
25ms response....

http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCDMonitor/Monitor_LCDMonitor_172W_sp.htm

its a pretty good monitor against my other VX900 (can't afford VX2000), improved characteristics overall, and playing stuff like RtCW in 1280x768 widescreen does rock....

in general i'm liking this monitor better than almost all the other monitors that i've seen so far, except an eizo l-something,... which had like a 16ms response or something... which rocked, but otherwise, this is the best monitor i've used so far....

edit: watercooled barton2500+@2500mhz (2.1/2.2v vcore) and a 5600ultra voltmodded plays any game at 1280x768 (max res) without fsaa and af at about 100fps... which rocks a lot more that fsaa/af on,... the widescreen aspect allows more viewing angle and there fore in stuff like rtcw i can almost see people coming from 90 degrees, which makes me invincible as a panzerfauster...

Got my benq 17w fp767 about a week ago and have been avoiding posting anything about it because i was so dissapointed in the quality of the of the picture. The bottom of the screen was so brite it whitewashed my tray icons while near the top the same shade of grey was noticably darker.i downloaded 3d 2003 and while running it the diving trools were so dark there were hardly any distinguisable features of them.It scored 1455 at stock settins so i thought there might be a little tweaking needed.thats when i found the color correctin in n-views panel. As soon as i turned up the digital vibrance,i saw a noticable improvement. The tray icons became almost crystal clear and the colors were fantastic.I reran 3d mark and the diving trools skin texture looked like they were painted with an artist brush.I scored less than 1000,but what a picture! I also found that the viewing anle was causing the lighter darker shades because my screen sits on a platform 8 inches above my desktop and most folks would sit much lower.By tilting the display downward the picture became uniform.I am using the digital to analog plugin that came with my vid card but had no idea that a little tweaking would change the picture from from crap to better than the old 955df crt.I only play one game online, delta force land warrior but it is much easier on my eyes than the 19 inch crt was(I'm old and visually imparied).Meybe you guys should also list your tweaked settings so that others would benefit from your expertise.

I just went through a NEC1912, 500:1, 25ms response, which had gorgeous colors, but serious ghosting on MOH, and mainly bright stationary objects. Action figures and effects were awesome. RMA'd that puppy and traded up to NEC 1980VS, designed for graphics, etc., 600:1, 25ms response, but much less ghosting. The crispness and saturation of the colors is awesome. One other thing I've noticed about the LCDs is that require something like a burn in to get the pixels jumping. I've been using the new one for 3 days and it looks better with less ghosting each time out. With the reduction of bulk (and weight on my poor comp stand), i don't see going back to a CRT any time soon.
PS. the LCD's replaced a Sony E400 trinitron, which is a pretty decent CRT.

My new NEC 1760nx is great for gaming!

I'm using the DVI port with a $7 cable I got from ebay. I haven't even tried the analog yet. So far, it's great in all my games:

Quake 3 - Very minimal blurring is noticable under extremely quick movements. When I play normal, instead of throwing the mouse around to test the LCD, it's great. It's a little easier to notice people against similarily textured backgrounds now.

Ravenshield - Played great. On super dark levels, I turned the contrast to 100% to make it easier to see. This made windows look wierd, and I have a feeling the developers of the game didn't intend for you to see everything on a pitch black night in the game.

CS - Worked great. I had to change scaling options in windows to get it to work at a near native res. HL doesn't do 1280x1024, only 1280 x 960, so I set it up to run centered. The two little black bars on the top and the bottom aren't much of an annoyance.

So for,

Mine's rather old, but IMHO is one of the best ever made. The auto-setup mode's the best, and colors are really vibrant. I happened to get one with only one malfunctioning pixel, not in the center of the screen. Ghosting is not apparent except with bright objects against dark backgrounds, or dark objects against white backgrounds. When scrolling slowly, the moving contents look blurred, unlike on CRT monitors.

Though it supports up to 75Hz, the highest mode looks rather blurry. 72Hz is dramatically better, but the finest granularity IMHO is at 60Hz.

I sometimes get brightness variation, I.E. signal distortion, and could blame that on the analog connection, but I'm not sure. Definitely this monitor's much easier on your eyes than a CRT, and despite working almost all day behind this monitor I still have 20/20 vision.

LG Flatron 53LE 15" (equiv. of a 17" CRT)
Price - $ 372.00 (was $400 when I bought it)
Max res/color/rate - 1024x768x32 75Hz
contrast ratio - 250:1
Response time - 25ms
Brightness - 200cd/m2
Dot pitch - 0.3mm
Aspect ratio - 4:3
Horizontal-vertical max viewing - 140deg/120deg
TCO 99 compliant
33W power dissipation

Note that this monitor cannot be viewed very well from below, even at a modest angle. And resolutions below 1024x768 look really crappy. But those are minor issues.

In conclusion, a very good monitor, and games very well without any noticeable blurring, despite its age. And even though it runs on an analog cable, colors and details are very crisp.

450:1 Contrast ratio

1280x1024 native resolution
Analog and DVI-D

I couldn't be happier after I purchased this monitor. Everything looks crystal clear, the monitor is very bright and easy to see even from across the room. Compared to my 19" CRT, this is obviously the superior gaming monitor. I haven't noticed any ghosting or anything bad. I haven't gotten a DVI cable yet, but even with the analog this monitor is amazing. The only annoying thing is an OSD box pops up whenever you are running at non-native resolution, telling you that you aren't running at the native resolution, which can get somewhat annoying. Anybody know a way to get rid of this?

Hmm, I seem to be the only one here with the Samsung 191T.

Specs:
Viewable Area: 19" Resolution 1280-1024
Pixel Pitch: 0.294mm
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Response Time 25ms
Color Depth: 16.7 Mil

As far as gaming goes it seems to be okay. I havn't notice any ghosting in any games besides Counter-Strike, but I believe I know why. Because the max resolution I can set in Counter-Strike is 1280x980, my monitor is having to use interpolation to get it full screen, and that may be causing ghosting to be more noticable (although I'm not positive on this theory), because I have yet to see any noticable ghosting in any other games I play, like Unreal II or UT2003. The color on it is absolutly brilliant, and my only complaint is the few dead pixels. Actually, one completly dead, two side by side that will show only blue on greyish-black backrounds, and one that I noticed that will show red every now and then. Although, they're not nearly as noticable as I thought they would be... I barely notice them at all.

Are there any known ways to reduce ghosting, like vsync?

Your not the only one with a Samsung 191T.

Specs:
Viewable Area: 19" Resolution 1280-1024
Pixel Pitch: 0.294mm
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Response Time 25ms
Color Depth: 16.7 Mil

Got this monitor when it just came out and still I am very pleased with its performance and looks! Theres only SLIGHT ghosting in UT2003 and NO ghosting in BF1942 so its bearable. Zero dead pixels :D

Even though i payed almost twice for whats its going for now, it was worth every penny!

Gonna save up for a 24" widescreen LCD with <16ms response time so this LCD will be with me for awhile.

A second one of these is very tempting too...I dont know.

BTW, fafnir why'd you post a pic of my system above?

I use an Eizo FlexScan L367, connected to a Matrox P650 via DVI.

In Quake III, everything seems very smooth: I don't notice any ghosting or anything like that, and the picture quality is good.

The only real complaint is the lack of true black, but I suppose that that's inherent with LCD...

Hi gaming dudes!

Well, I ought to share my recent findings.
I too have tried the Hitatchi CML174 just like PhobMX.

While gaming on the device is possible, it isn't like I feel "OMG I got to get me an LCD now !!!"

I feel , well.. ok it works pretty good but far from perfect.

I'm not exactly an expert (like a very picky pro dude) in actiongames but I've been playing it pretty heavily since the intel P1 166 was fresh off the line.

I notice a slight choppyness to the updates while I turn/run/drop rapidly, also the Hitatchi has an slight afterglow on the red pixels. (It could well be just on the speciment I'm testing of coz.)

I first notice this effect in an UT 2003 DM map which has some high green trees, but not the forest type map. If you look at the trees and sweep in a panoramic way you'll notice a red haze trailing the green trees. A bit annoying but not so noticeable if you're in an intense fight! :)

It also felt like black and "close to black" pixels didn't get separated good, meaning enemys hiding in the dark was harder to see.

Next thing that buggers me is the fact that the monitor has a screen width/height ratio of 1.25:1
Which means if I have the resolution set to 1024 x 768 everything will look too stretched! Circles will be oval!

They become so since 1024/768 = aspect ratio of 1.33 !!!

While....

Native resolution(1280 x 1024) equals ratio 1.25:1 (1280/1024)

So, the Hitatchi LCD screen is a bit more square than regular CRTs which are usually 1.33:1.

I have the resolution set to 1024 x 768 so that the machine will cope with all (more or less) UT maps without dropping the fps too low. That means I see everything a bit stretched. I.e watching a planet in the backdrop... I'll see an oval planet. Aslo, if an object is rotating it will shrink and stretch depending if it is in the "standing up" or "laying down" position.

So buyer beware! ...if you mostly run "out of native" resolutions.

I also currently run the windows desktop in 1024 x 768. So everything looks a bit weird and stretched. I think that everything becomes so teeny weeeny if I set it to 1280 x 1024. I must probably set it to 1280 x 1024 and try to modify the text and icons to a bigger style, getting around the 1.25:1 ratio "bug".

Otherwize I agree with most others, LCD's are addictive, vivid colors, calm and easy on the eyes. Sleek and slender, portable and such, it's good for us LAN dudes.

After trying this LCD on for about 20 hours, I must confess, going back to plain crt was a step down on the ladder indeed. The picture looked bloated and fishy-eyed. Colors less vibrant... but the gameplay improved somewhat since my Eizo(17inch and 20 inch) cranks out some 110 updates/sec :p

i have been one of those who has used LCD's for a long long time... i got mine almost exactly a year ago, for my "grad" gift.... when my g'ma noticed i spend so much time on the computer, she decided to pay for the lcd for me... it was the best gift i have ever received... ok, so it is only 15".... but for a year old lcd, it is awesome... i have NEVER seen it ghost in ANY of the games, the whole refresh rate thing kicks ass, oh yeah, and no radiation.... i was building some pc's over a weekend once... and had 4 crt's beside me... and a lcd in front of me... by the end of the day, i had a terrible headache... i can only blame the crt's...

This thread doesn't look like it's being used much anymore, but I'll add to the list with a monitor that isn't on here yet. I just bought a Sony SDM-X73.

17"
16ms refresh
500:1 Contrast ratio
300 cd/m2 Brightness
0.264mm pixel pitch
3 inputs: 2 analog, 1 DVI

I'm very pleased with this monitor. I just got it today and haven't had much time with it, but it looks amazing compared to my 19" viewsonic CRT thats dying a slow death. Played a little UT2k3, because my biggest fear about getting an LCD was ghosting during games. I was very impressed though, it looks fantastic on a GF4 4400.

Overall, it's a very bright, crisp monitor and I'm extremely happy with it. I also got a good deal on it at newegg if anyone is interested. They sell it for $506 with a $100 instant rebate when you add it to your cart. It's a very good deal for a 17" LCD from sony with these stats and features.

oh ya, and it comes with a DVI cable :D

I'm very impressed with this monitor... offers 90 degree screen rotation for horizontal view or vertical view.... gaming is awesome.. no ghosting what so ever... no dead pixels when I got it which is a good thing... comes with both DVI and analog cable....got it off ebay for 450$ shipped.. lucky me....;) :D :p :)

Supported Resolutions 1280 x 1024 SXGA
Pixel Pitch 0.264 mm x 0.264 mm

These are economical LCD's at right around $400. I've purchased 11 of these between work and home and use them in 4 dual setups at work with matrox G450's and G550's and at home with Gainward GF4 Ti 4200. I can attest to 3 bad subpixels across those 11 LCD's.

For gaming, I play a lot of F1C and GTR2002, racing games for those who don't know. I don't see any ghosting, tearing, whatever you wish to call it. Couldn't be happier with this screen although I am strongly considering getting a PX171M and giving this to my sons for the sake of their young eyes. Much better than the Samsung 955DF they are using. :)

Very happy with this monitor, got it for under $600 from Newegg, and it's amazing how much crisper the colors are than on my 17" LG Flatron CRT monitor. The screen appears brighter even at the lowest setting, and everything looks beautiful with DVI input.

Slight ghosting in Quake 3, but I swear the detail and size of the screen caused my rail percentage to jump from 20% last week to 30%no problems in Max Payne 2 or Halo(they both look %&@ing fantastic). I can even run games and have windows open on my secondary monitor without noticeable performance loss or crashing. Even switching resolutions within the game isn't a problem, the other monitor refreshes and the samsung jumps back in-game within seconds.

I bought this monitor for gaming and really really really love it. Highly recommended.

I have been extremely happy with this monitor. The only thing that I do not like about it is the speakers. The main reason I got this was the price. I looked at all the 18's and 19's because at the time I wanted dual input, and nothing below the 18 had both of these. I caught a price mistake at Office Depot and got a $100 mail in rebate and ended up paying $500 AFTER tax and free shipping. At the time this monitor retailed at $850.

If you are a hard core gamer you may be a bit miffed at the dark images, but it has not annoyed me in the least bit. Like most LCD's the black images just aren't as good as the CRT's. I mostly play bf1942 and it's beautiful! Ghosting has been minimal, it's bright, it's vivid, and it's a nice large screen.

I have the BenQ FP767 17" (Black):

500:1 contrast ratio

260 cm/d brightness
Analog Input

After reading about people here liking this monitor, I got one for $399 from Newegg, and I love it. I had a KDS Rad-5 15" LCD before, and this monitor is so much better than it. I don't notice any ghosting in games (UT2003, BF1942, CS), and the picture is really clear. I run mine at 1024x768 with a Radeon 9800np and 2500+ at 2280MHz, and I haven't had a problem with it (I've only had it for around 3 months, though), except for the fact that the backlighting is more intense on the top and bottom, but it took me 1 month to notice, and I can't even tell that there is a difference most of the time. I recommend this monitor to anyone who needs an LCD.

Had mine about a month. No bad pixels yet.
Plays games great, MSCFSim3, Ghost Recon, NASCAR, 2003, UT2k3. I have not noticed any ghosting in any of the games.
I can faintly notice some minor blurring in UT2k3 under extreme conditions. Not enough to bother me in the least. Native mode is 1280x1024 and it looks fantastic. I have also tried other resolutions down to 1024x768, particularly 1152x864. They are quiet acceptable, but not as clear as the native mode. I do run MSCFSim3 in 1024x768 because of the gpu ponies it takes. I don't use the speakers or mic on the LCD so I can't comment on them. All in all I am extremely happy with it and would buy it again with no reservations.

I highly recommend this monitor, if you can find it at your local Best Buy for the cheaper price (than the website).

It is simply amazing...I love this thing to death!! my eyes are no long yelling for SOS from staring at the screen for a long period of time. I am not a big gamer myself, but do play UT2003, and i don't see any ghosting @ 1280 x 1024 @ 60 hertz. Although this is a great monitor, but for pc users, have to purchase an extra converter, about 90 ~ 100$ more....and apple warrenty sucks big time. i paid about 740 for the lcd and the adc to dvi thing...with student discount. If anyone intested in this monitor, check out azatek.com, for they have it for 499 + free shipping... man, i really wish i can sell my lcd for 600 and get it from azatek, but i cannot part with the lcd from my daily live no mo:p

P.s, i am still a pc user at large, so please don't stone with apple craps or anything...

Does the monitor look the image Sony website. I want to make sure thats the correct model that New Egg is selling. Everyone else online had that monitor priced at $599.00 and there is a $50.00 Sony mail in rebate. Are you still able to get a$50.00 rebate.

Well, I just picked up a new LCD monitor today, and this thing owns all. It’s a Sony HX73, and here’s the specs:

Model: Sony SDM-HSX73/B
Panel Type: TFT Active Matrix
Pixel Pitch: 0.264 mm
Viewable Image Size: 17.0"
Native Resolution: 1280 x 1024
Brightness & Contrast (max): 400 cd/m2; 500:1
Response Time (Rise/Fall): 16ms
Input Connector(s): Digital (DVI-D)
Analog (HD15) x2
Weight (Display): 14.3 lbs

I just finished playing some UT2004, and it looks amazing. With the 16ms response time there is no blurring at all. The colors are very good and sharp. I’d say this might even surpass the UltraSharp screen on my Dell laptop as far as quality, color and sharpness. DVI rocks btw. :)

I love this screen, I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to CRT again.

This thing is great! I'm using DVI to my FX 5900 ultra and even non-native resolutions look fairly clear. I game at 1024x768 usually, and the only gripe I have is that sometimes the screen draws in such a way that there is a rolling line in the scenery. Also, Windows is limiting me to a 60hz refresh rate, for some reason. That's more like 25ms, rather than 16ms, and I haven't found a fix for it yet despite using the latest drivers from IBM. The panel is rated at 85hz, as said above.

Another plus is that the PSU is integrated into the monitor, so I don't have to hide a brick somewhere. Lastly, there are no speakers, which I prefer, since I have some nice ones already.

God I love this monitor. I was impressed with my old Hitachi, but this dude delivers far better image quality and adaptability to non-native resolutions. Native resolution is crystal clear, non-native resolutions look really well tho even with analog input. I've done nothing formal, but my little experience with this monitor tells me that DVI feels like smoother and a little sharper, i dunno, it might be only placebo effect but i think DVI is well worth it in an LCD monitor if not a must. I don't regret ever getting this monitor, 1280x1024 and 85Hz is my perfect quality/performance choice, so I'm keeping this baby until DVI connectors are discontinued. Eye strain is non existant, I've stared at this monitor for up to 8 str8 hours without a glimpse, i start to get tired and sleepy before my eyes hurt. As a side note, I couldn't stand more than an hour with normal CRT monitor before... So I say well spent money for life :D

Have a samsung 213T. Very nice, no ghosting, DVDs look beautiful.

The only problem that i have is possible interference from some other device creeps onto the screen sometimes. It's wierd, I cant describe it, but it happens infrequently enough to not bother me. Will probably replace it before the warranty runs out to make sre that it was just that one monitor. Otherwise, it's beautiful. 21.3"

First off this thing is a monster! the screen is so freaking huge, to a person who's been using pc's w/crt's as his dvd player for years this thing is like a freaking bigscreen to me. DVD's are a sheer pleasure as the colors are more vibrant than my old crt, plus I am able to notice way more fine detail than I ever could before (did I mention it's freaking huge! :) ) I'm loving the brightness when compared against crt's as I was getting tired of how dark crt's were becoming. Desktop usage is also better as text is alot sharper and easier to read.
Ghosting is a mixed bag. There is slight ghosting when scrolling through webpages but I'm getting used to it. As for gaming, fps and racing games have some very slight ghosting that isn't very noticable or displeasing to the eye but nhl2004 is severly bad and causes me headaches after 10mins of play. I have sorta worked around this by breaking out a wireless gamepad and sitting 8+feet from the monitor. The size diffrence and sharpness has definately helped my aim in fps's though. Overall I am fairly pleased with it but it's a bit hard swallowing the $1600 price tag.

GAMES

first game I tried was Day of Defeat on a map called anzio - I was horrified to see quite bad ghosting. left me with a kind of sick feeling in my stomach, but upon loading Warhammer 40K Dawn of War (which is fine) and then Homeworld 2 (Which is fine) Farcry (which is fine) Joint Operations (which is fine) I began to feel good about my purchase again...so far the worst ghosting I have seen (and its quite noticeable) is in anything based on the HL engine (CS, DOD etc) however pretty much any recent game is near perfect and I barely notice a thing.

and on further investigation I only found it to be doing bad ghosting on things shaded red on HL stuff (IE in DOD you get alot of dark red tank traps) - but its great.

GENERAL

amazing - I think my eyes are going through withdrawl from blury CRT monitors (they are almost hurting because its not fuzzy in the middle :) )

everything is so bright and vibrant (as a mention to the games, most fps I have played seem to have this extra realistic glean to things) it can look a bit messy on the desktop at lower than native resolutions - doesnt seem to look so bad in games running say 1024x768.

but only been using it literally 15 minutes - so off to play with more stuff!!

sounds like a poor contrast ratio problem to me. Personally d3 looks killer on my lcd, and in dark areas I can distinguish foes from the background. I have a friend with a 19" crt and I personally think d3 looks better on my lcd. Have you tried turning the lights off? I can see a bit better in the dark areas when I have the lights off in my room.

How's the brightness on the 172X? I noticed that it's specs are a little less than the 710T so im deciding between the two. The 172X has a very cool style to it though! And it is a little cheaper, but I might get the 710T for the better specs.

Looking at the DVI vs. Dsub debate, it looks like I should go with DVI.

I bought me a Syntax Olevia 30" LCD and it's great. I don't have any negative things to say about it. It have all the connections you want for a LCD TV. DVI, VGA, 3mm Audio plug, HDTV components, Svideo, and 2 speakers! All these for $999. The best monitor I have ever purchase, and will be keeping it for a year or two.

Just got my Hyundai / ImageQuest L90D+ 19" LCD this morning. Here's the info:

Panel Type: A-Si TFT Active Matrix
Native Resolution: SXGA (1280 x 1024)
Pixel Pitch: 0.294 mm
Brightness: 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
View Angle: 150° / 135° (Horizontal / Vertical)
Input Connectors: 15-pin D-sub, DVI-D, Audio in
Features: Built-in 2x 2w speakers & Headphone out; Adjustable Pivot & Tilt/Height Stand
Dimensions & Weight: 16.3" x 17.1 x 7.9" (WxHxD), 12.3 lbs

Busted out Unreal Tournament 2k4 on it and it was flawless! I also tested Need For Speed: Underground 2, and Doom3 on it and not a single hint of ghosting yet. That 8ms response time is friggin' sweet for gaming!

As far as in the desktop and normal apps, everything seems to be running smoothly. A few people on newegg.com said they've had some issues with the contrast, but I don't see anything. After replacing a 15" CRT this thing is HUUUUUGE!

I haven't tested out the speakers yet as I have a nice 5.1 system going, so I think they may stay virgin :D

Just got my Samsung SyncMaster 172x few weeks ago from newegg. ($450 after tax and shipping)

Very slik looking LCD, the design is extremely sexy.

Came with zero dead pixels

Running on 1280 by 1024 resolution on Radeon 9600pro (because anything else that isnt its native resolution looks kinda funky, not too bad though) At its native resollution the image is beautiful!

No ghosting in Unreal Tournament 2k4 at all no matter how hard i looked for it!

No ghosting in NFS Underground 2.

Very minimal ghosting in NHL2004. I dont notice it during gaming, only when i put my head 5inches away from LCD and look for ghosting on purpose. Only then its noticeable.

Its very bright, but easily adjustable to 4 lvls of brightnes. One touch bottom can go from Entertain mode (brightest) to Internet (medium) to Text (Darkest) and Custom, and i am running it through DVI

SO far im extremely happy with it.

PS make sure your video card can run games at 1280by1024 resolution because thats this LCDs native resolution. Anything other than that the image is a bit funky. But at native resolution games come alive!

Hope this helps

Last week I purchased a 19" Neovo F-419 LCD for $400 and it was worth every penny.

Size: 19"
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Response Time (in ms): 25
Pixel Pitch (in mm): 0.294
Brightness (cd/m2): 300
Max. Resolution: SXGA 1280 x 1024
Analog Interface: Yes
DVI Interface: Yes
Features: 16.6" x 16.2" x 8.7"
Viewing Angle: L/R 170 degree, U/D 170 degree

I have never had a monitor with DVI input, and I can notice a huge difference in clarity between the standard vga and the dvi. The only complaint is that the base is a little flimsy, but I am planning on purchasing and LCD Monitor Arm soon.

Currently I am playing Far Cry (again), Halo, NFSU, and UT2004 and everything looks great, this is a great monitor with a great price.

Purchased a BenQ FP71G at Futureshop for $349cdn last night. This is my first dabble into LCD technology and I'm left completely disappointed. At the native resolution, it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, but I really should have done my research about other resolutions. Newer games are not going to run at 1280x1024 full speed, but really that's the only rez you can use without going nutts. Even with the 12ms response time, I still notice ghosting/smudging in games (tried BF1942/HL2/CS:S).. It was minimal at first and then I pretty well couldn't distinguish later. It had 2 lit pixels near the middle of the display.. one was an annoying red and the other brownish. If I really was playing every game in 1280x1024 and there were no other issues.. I would keep it.

Returning it today for a new 19" CRT beast. Boy was the LCD sexy though.. but ergonomics obviously are not everything for me.

Well it looks like the venerable Hyundai L90D+ that I have been reading so many good things about finally has some competition. I think Samsung was a little upset that Hyundai was stealing so many of their sales with this monitor. The L90D+ uses the same Samsung panel so there shouldn't be a huge difference in quality between the two. So why not buy the Samsung 915N instead? In my opinion, it was because the Hyundai offered analong AND digital connection, where the Samsung offered only analog.

I think Samsung was listening, because they just released this new 19":

http://www.samsung.com/nl/products/monitor/lcdmonitors/files/730b.pdf

Claiming 8ms rsponse time, has DVI inputs, 6 pre-programmed custom settings (text, internet, movie, sports, gaming, and custom); 600:1 contrast ratio; 160/160 viewing angle; 16.2 million colors, etc.

Oh and it's black. :) While I read many good reviews for the Hyundai L90D+ dammit all I just didn't like the color! Call me crazy but all my components are black and I didnt want a gray monitor frame. I also didn't really want/need the built in speakers on the Hyundai since I use either headphones when gaming, or my Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1s for music and movies. I also heard lots of complaints about the Hyundai's awkwardly placed, cheap quality control buttons. I have not used this monitor, I am merely repeating what I have heard those who purchased it have said.

All of this, plus the fact that I could not acquire the Hyundai locally to try it out caused me to wait. Well, my wait was over as of last night. I just picked up the Samsung 930B at BestBuy. Got it for $469 - $90 mail in rebate = $379 final cost. So far I am quite impressed. Man is it fast. I like to play RTCW a LOT, also play Doom3 and Half-Life 2. Initial testing in all of these games reveals no ghosting, tearing, blurriness, etc. It seems every bit as fast as my trusty old CRT, but the colors will blow you away. Text also appears razor-sharp. I will post further details after a few more days testing if anyone is interested. Happy to answer any questions you might have as well.

Haven't heard any reviews about DVI but I only got a Analog Cable but the image never had ANY distortion and provided one of the clearest images I've ever seen. Native Resolution for this monitor may be kind of high but it wasn't too blurry when I switched to 1024x768. All in all, this monitor is worth every penny.

I bought a Hyundai L90D+ as per recommendations from this forum, and sent it back a week later. Blurriness, though still slightly noticable, was nothing like previous LCD's. However, black depth and color reproduction were not very good, and the viewing angle was super duper tiny.

Wasn't suitable to replace my Viewsonic G90FB 19" CRT, this is a good CRT and I wasn't going to replace it with a monitor that was substandard to it in almost every way.

However, I'm giving LCD's one last shot. I have a viewsonic vp191b (the overdrive MVA revision one) on the way right now. It should be here thursday or friday. I'll post my experiences with that one as well :)

i have a samsung 172x. it's a good gaming lcd. no ghosting whatsoever. only thing that bugs me is with panels like this could only achieve such a low response time by going from 8bit color to 6bit color. this causes differences in color. not noticeable most of the time though as you get used to it.

Specs:
Diagonal Size: 17"
Display Type: Flat Panel/TFT Active Matrix
View: 140 deg horizontal / 120 deg vertical
Dot Pitch: 0.264 mm
Brightness: 250 cd/m^2

Max Resolution: 1280x1024
Max Sync Rate (V x H): 75Hz x 80kHz

I really like this monitor. I have no clue what the response time (ms) is, but I don't care since I got it for free through work. I run the resolution at factory recommended 1280x1024. It's a big jump for me in display devices coming from a old Gateway 17" CRT which was getting more and more blurry every day. And since I'm still on a older P2 platform (in process of building new PC now), Quake 2/3 and Unreal Tournament look really good.

Ok well my friend couldnt not wait to get his monitor from me {Viewsonic VX924 19" Silver-Black LCD, 4ms 550:1.} so he ordered from Newegg.com {mistake #1} and we plug it in and it breaks after 2 days. because he didnt get it from me he had to pay for shipping back and forth to them and he ended up paying way over his original price. We got a replacement and i hooked him up with a extended warranty through viewsonic. I have sold over 30 of these in the past 2 months and they are HOT! All others are a pale comparison compared to the 4ms rsp time.

I recently bought a Samsung Syncmaster 915N. I can highly reccomend it or the 940B (which to my knowledge is the same monitor, but with DVI for a bit extra).

Image quality is fantastic, the contrast ratio is surprisingly high and the brightness is just plain superb. The only flaw that I have noticed is that several shades of red display in a washed out fashion.

The lack of DVI doesn't seem to be a problem for this monitor, so if you want to save 40 bucks + buying a DVI cable it would be fine (if you have no money constraints however I would reccomend the 940B). Text is perfect, showing no signs of the analog to digital conversion. The response time is also very nice, Unreal Tournament 2004 and WOW show no signs of streaking.

Only real compain is that some images when moving very fast appear to kind of tear. Somewhat strange, but not really a both as it happens so fast and sporadically that you can only see it if you are looking for it.

Would give it an 9/10. (9/10 Contrast, 9/10 Brightness, Interference 9/10, Color 8/10, Response time 10/10)

Well, im the thread starter and have to make my second review :D

Viewsonic n2750w 27" 8ms 800:1

It has got any input you can think of but HDMI (which i dont wanna hear about anyway). It has a few quirks: everytime you switch input the AR in the DVI input will switch back to 16:9 and in order to have matched resolution you have to set it manually back to 1:1. VGA Input has better refresh support but it tears now and then, so i just use dvi... but dont take my word on it, i'm gonna give it a second chance and update this review. I also see washed green and red edges now and then in dark areas but i have to be really picky to really notice it, it doesnt bother me.

Other than these couple of quirks its damn nice!!! i dont regret buying it at all. It was cheap, its big, its bright, image is a lot crisper than my old vp171b, its a good brand and the revised remote control is good. Sound isnt astonishing but well over average so if you want the best bang for the buck bit LCD go for this baby :) You'll forget about these little details quickly :D

I got a 19" LCD Sceptre x9g komodo V from tiger direct

comeing from a 5 year old 17 " (16" screen I guess) envision CRT I was kind of dissapointed with the new LCD

the pixel pitch (wich I didnt understand the importance of) has kind of got me down, if I had it to do again Id just go 17 inch for better pixel pitch so games like Rome:total war wouldnt look ugly

color seems good, image is physically stable (no wavy lines or anomalies), took me a long time fiddling with it, right now contrast and brightness are set to 6/32, and for some games I have to set contrast to 2

the other sad thing is it had advertizment wich would lead average joe to beleave they were purchaseing a monitor with both Analog and Digital input

Features

* Flicker and Static Free
* PNP: DDC1/2B (Analog), DDC2B (Digital)
* Less Than VLMF Radiation Standard
* Panel & base detachable
* Factory presetting mode: 41
* Ergotron Arm Compatible (VESA 100mm)

it got me, I chose this monitor over another because this ones features appeared to indicate it had digital input, and i wanted to use my video cards digital input and rent DVDs instead of VHS, and watch on my computer, wich helped push my decision to go 19"

and since reading the digital vs analog forum Im even more dissapointed, even though I dont know what Im missing

has minor ghosting, or blurring, or whatever, Im not quite sure of the way peaple use those terms, and so many peaple say no ghosting what soever, and I cant see how that can be true, even reviews on a viewsonic with 2ms response time reported minor ghosting, but I assume that DVI LCDs with the same response time would see lest burring/ghosting

was $300 Canadian after 70 rebate
after taxes and shipping, and after I get the rebate it will have been about 385 outa pocket

the minor ghosting doesnt even bother me really, its the big pixels

age of kings, Rome total war, close combat, all games with many tiny sprites or viewing at long distances, all at Native Resolution, still so grainy :bang head , first person shooters are good on it though

there was a link on the first page I think, supposedly to a tool wich will help scaleing, but the link doesnt work, could anyone send me that tool or give me a good link? monitor tool kit or something like that

I've had my 19" Viewsonic with the 8ms response, but a couple of weeks ago I bought the 3ms one and on dvi with my geforce 7800gtx and my pend D, this thing ROCKS! :attn:
Anything I do on this thing is absolutely flawless.
I would recommend this monitor to EVERYONE!

Viewsonic VP201b. It flat rocks. Pulling 80fps at mostly high settings (dynamic shadows/lighting are off and no AA/AF) in BF2 with the rig-in-the-sig and the monitor doesn't bat an eyelash. I can whip around to pwn (or get pwned by) a guy coming up on my rear and there is zero lag, tears, or ghosting.

I still see reviews, comparisons, and comments about this LCD being the GOAT of gaming LCD's, like this one at Tom's (http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/17/viewsonic_vp930_lcd_monitor/) where the author states that the new VP930 isn't an improvement over the 201b, and I couldn't agree more.

I was surprised at how well this performed. Previously I had 2 19" Samsung 930B's, and I couldn't be happier with the upgrade. I played a little COD2 last night at 1600x....whatever the res is for that. Ran it at 4xAA and it looked awesome. Talk about addictive.

I picked it up on ebay for $1608, and it came brand new in box. I am going to attempt to transfer the 3yr warranty very soon. No dead pixels or damage.

Tech Specs Here (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/monitor_3007wfp?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~section=specs#tabtop)

I didn't see much if any ghosting on COD2. Also, I had to turn the brightness down a bit, so it's not lacking there. Some LCDs you have to crank up the brightness in games, but this seemed great even reducing the brightness. I will test more tonight with Toca3 and some other games. I'd highly recommend it if you have the cash.

Make sure your vid card supports dual link DVI, most 7800s and X1800+ do.

I have a dell Ultra sharp 2005FPW, a recent upgrade from a 21" true flat trinitron. I cannot believe i didn't decide to go lcd, or widescreen for that matter. I have had no glitches, ghosting, any othe problems thus far. I did have some minor light leakage the fist few days of use, but only o black screen. That has since subsided. Unbeleiveable detail on Need for speed most wanted, and COD2

Had the 2005, worked great, loved it so much I sold it and bought a 2405, same thing...don't see ghosting, much crisper picture, takes up a fraction of space....heh I got 3 LCD's now, a 2405 and 2 2001's

I have the viewsonic 19" vx922, it set me back a fair chunk but it puts my old videocom CRT (19"tube 17" viewable) to shame, the 2ms response time is great but the depth is brilliant. i have only had it for a couple of days but i am already in love.

Gateway FPD2185W. Simply put: Awsome!
Not a bit of ghosting that I can notice. No noticeable "lag". Colors are beautiful, and images are sharp. Only drawback i have with gaming on it is the fact that my system can't push all my games at 1680x1050 res without dropping some of the settings (FEAR makes it  ). It comes with hookups for vga, dvi, svideo, and component, so it will work with pc's and consoles. I'ld love to have an X-box 360 to hook up to it to see how the hd games look on it.

Well, my LCD isn't exactly considered a "Gaming" LCD, but I noticed a big difference when switching from a 17" CRT to my VA902b. I didn't notice ghosting or other similar performance dropping issues, but the contrast and saturation was greater, it seemed smoother, brighter and more fluid. I love it :D I especially noticed the difference when playing GTA.

Completely awesome.

Dell 2005FPW A03 + Hyundai L90D+

Dell is the main screen,Hyundai is secondary, and for games that wont play nice with widescreen.

Love the Dell, crisp, relatively bright,no noticeable ghosting in games or movies.extremely mild bleed on top left corner, that is hardly noticeable
even in a darkly lit room, playing widescreen dvd movies.I stick to the default res on both, but the Dell has 1:1 pixel mapping/resize and does
it well.1280x800 looks pretty darn good as well.I tried hooking it up with a few usb devices(mouse, pen drives)and a vcr and all worked well, and as
expected. No input lag that I can see.

I paid 380 Cdn for the Dell in June 2006 off [H]ardOCP forums. When I bought it,it was 7 months old.It has given me no problems and has performed
very well.It has about 23 months left on the warranty.Only thing I dont like about the 2005 is the service menu, but oh well, nothing is perfect. Its
12ms,but seems faster.Has great contrast, and can be as bright as the sun if you like it that way... :)

The Hyundai kicks butt as a gaming lcd,and is used primarily for Itunes and chat,as well as Acdsee/Photshop stuff. Its bright, and very vibrant.Colors
are inviting and crisp in games, and has 1 stuck pixel at the lower right half of the screen.I bought the Hyundai in Dec of 2005 for 339 Cdn + taxes. It
has no bleed at all. Also and again,no input lag that I can notice, and as an aside,I have used LCD's that did have that dreaded issue.

I am going to be purchasing a larger main screen in mid March.I have it down to the upcoming Samsung 245T(899 Cdn.),or the Dell 2407WFP A03
(699 to 899 Cdn.) May likely go with the Dell,I can get discount coupons very easy from friends that work for Dell locally here in Ottawa. Both were
driven by a Asus EN7800GT until Dec 2006,when my wife snagged me a eVGA 8800GTS for xmas :santa:

Pretty good for gaming. I play lots of CS:S and BF2, and it all looks great. About the only complaint I have is that 1440x900 is just a bit low, but for what I paid its an awesome monitor.

I absolutely love this monitor for gaming. That's pretty much all I do on my PC and it has been spectacular since I got it. Just beat Prey on it and the game looked incredible.

One bad note: after a month, I got a stuck pixel. I know this could happen to anyones monitor by chance but it's still a bit disappointing.

I just picked up this monitor last week and it is pretty nice. No ghosting on any gaming so far. With the native res that high it pulls my video card pretty hard though. Good excuse to build a new computer.

Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP
20.1" @ 1680x1050
S-IPS LG Panel (later came the S-PVA Samsung Panel)
800:1 Contrast Ratio
300cd/m2
16ms response time
One DVI-D Input w/HDCP Support - One Analogue Input - One S-Video Input - One Composite Input
2 USB Ports on the side

[edit: I should mention the on screen menu is a little weird at first but you have a TON of adjustment options for colour etc...]

By far the BEST 20" WS monitor around for the price. Nothing beats an S-IPS panel for colour accuracy. DO NOT be duped by very low response times compared to this monitor's 16ms. Far inferior TN panels have low advertised response times to appeal to gamers. I play FPS games almost everyday and have never experienced any ghosting issues.

If you want a quality 20" LCD for gaming or otherwise there is no beating the Dell 2007WFP!

Samsung syncmaster 206bw @1680x1050
2ms, 3000:1

great monitor until i play any sort of FPS game...

no ghosting but then again im not sure what im looking for. incredible motion blur and tearing. this is my first lcd so ive never experienced it before first hand, but having to set vsync at 60 and insta-switching between 60 and 30 in an fps is terrible, it truly makes me stop playing after a few minutes. the motion blur it so incredibly distracting that unless im standing still in all FPS ive tested (doom 3, quake wars demo, fear, hl2) its just unbearable...when i move the mouse quickly its like the entire world gets all smeared out.

UPDATE: This is with the "A" panel which upon further investigation i discovered is not a Samsung panel but some AUOptronics panel (spelling?) that is actually 5ms and according to various sites performs much worse in several areas (especially color representation) I havent found direct mention of similar motion blur problems as most reviews online have the "S" model (funny how samsung seems to get the good panels into all the right hands...) and I dont have both side to side to see if Im just overly anal or its an inherent problem with this particular panel. Either way the shadiness of Samsung in the basically bait and switch tactic has permanently banned them from my list of possible options in the future and I would strongly advise anyone considering their products to do research carefully. I personally would like everyone to ban them as this is unacceptable behavior and shows lack of concern over customer satisfaction whatsoever. If there was a problem with the "s" panel which forced them to swtich to the "a" they should have made it clear that the specs had changed and changed the model number. In numerous interviews online they were clearly denying the fact even when being questioned by interviewers who physically had the evidence of both panels on hand.

Hands down, my Viewsonic VX922 was (and still is) my absolute favorite monitor. 2ms response time, no ghosting, absolutely amazing. So the color reproduction is average, and the backlight bleeds in from all sides, and it has a resolution of only 1280x1024, and there's only DVI and VGA inputs, but in the end: this monitor has never failed me (if only my 2407WFP-HC was this good :p).

Why are so many people paying $450+ for 17" LCD monitors with 16ms refresh rate when there are plenty of 19" LCDs with 5ms rr that cost only $150-$200? Are there some important specs that I am missing or something?

Ya you are probably looking at old threads. But it is worth mentioning that response times are not the be-all and end-all of LCD specs. A quality panel with a 16ms response time is not necessarily bad for gaming. It's just that everyone jumped on that band wagon instead of the colour accuracy wagon and manufacturers are pumping out crap panels with 2ms response time and everyone is eating them up. So now we have a marketplace full of crap that ain't worth half of what you are paying IMHO, and even the good panels are being phased out and replaced with junk.

Ok rant over :)

HP w2007v. Didn't know v was for value before I bought it. ;) However, it does perform well for a "value" monitor, not to mention it cost more than one. I'm quite happy with it, although some things do give me a headache. It's horrible to get the settings right. It isn't as good on the eyes as I had thought. Isn't as sharp as it looked in the shop, either. "Native resolution" is a pain also. All in all, if you have a CRT, stay with it or buy the best used CRT you can get, which is still less than a cheap LCD.

And wide screen is overrated. Unless you want films, go for 4:3 for games. Or unless you actually like widescreen gaming, but apart from car racing games, I don't see where you'd like it. Should be more or less neutral in RPGs. But in stuff you need to control with your eyes, I'd say 4:3 is the best unless you can actually find 5:4 maybe (1280*1024 would look the best on that kind of monitor).

I just got a Samsung 305Tplus, the 30-inch...

It arrived without any dead pixels, has a great response time, and 2560x1600 resolution, which equates to more pixels than two 24-inch monitors combined. It is also the maximum resolution of most performance video cards.

This is the first time in years that I've ever felt comfortable with a single monitor instead of a multi-monitor setup. It really is nice to have the same amount of real-estate but without panes splitting up my desktop.

Definitely worth every penny (roughly $1200 on Newegg), and I'm sure the price will come down a great deal in the next 2 years.

Important things to note if you go with one of these:
The monitor puts off a lot of heat. You can feel it radiating against your face from several feet away when the screen is all white. It needs as much ventilation as your system, and should be kept away from windows.
They recommend that with such high resolutions to go with vid cards with larger than average Ram. I have a 9800GT over-clocked with 1Gb, which runs Cod4 at full res, maxed out, at an average of 30-45 fps... So I may upgrade the card, but for now it suffices (nobody really needs anti-aliasing at this resolution). I got this monitor mostly for image editing of course.
Since the monitor stands so tall, you might want to keep ceiling lights off that are behind you. Even though the monitor is anti-glare, some lights can get annoying bouncing off the top of it into my eyes.

I have a Viewsonic VX2753MH-LED with a 1ms response time. As far as input lag I've heard that the 24 inch model has around 12ms, so if that's the case, then this is one of the top LCD gaming monitors (http://www.squidoo.com/top-gaming-monitor) a solid budget option as well.

In the future I'm hoping to afford something like the Dell U2312HM which despite having a 8 ms response time has super low input lag (around 1ms) according to TFT Central and Prad.

Got my ASUS 23" IPS monitor today and is now hooked up and what a difference compared to my Acer 18" TN. Like night and day, but somehow, its not as tall as the specs indicated, making me wonder if I could have gone with something bigger. I really wonder how tall a Catleap Q270 stands from the desktop to the top of the display in inches, not milimenters, with minimum clearance. I have about 2 inches to work with still, but I guess its too late now. I'll just live with it but I am curious.
