I was wondering where the transistors in the CPU are placed?

Is the core actually the Die itself and are the transistors placed on the bottom side of the core? Or is the core only some kind of heat spreader which touches the top of the Die? Ýf so why is it not bigger for AMD's (like for PIV's) and if the core is not the Die itself, the material of the core seems not to be silver or copper or an silver/copper alloy, is this matterial a better heat cunductor then silver or alloy?
