okay
i have a mobo with once pci slot and on board eithernet
im not sueing the pci slot but i do have a pci > 802.11b card
can i use something like internet conncetion shareing and make it into a wap
would that work
( i know it would have like no security but i live like a mile away from everyone so its not a problem)
Buy a prism2-based pci card (older Linksys models used prism2, I hear they used Broadcom now) and put it into hostap mode. Bam, its an access point for all intents and purposes.
The machine would actually have more security (portentially) because you have ALOT more power to configure it than you would with a normal access point appliance.

it shouldn't matter which brand you use. If you want to be able to access the computers on the wired network, you will need to enable bridging on the connection. Win 2k and XP have this built in, just highlight the onboard lan, and wireless in network connections. then right click and click bridge.

With some string, glue, popcicle sticks and maccaroni anything can be done :) :D

You can use any WLAN NIC in Ad-Hoc mode, yeah. But if you want to emulate an access point, then you need a WLAN NIC with a hostAP driver. The prism2 cards are made for that kind of thing.
Something like this: http://www.cafwap.net/prism2ap/
Otherwise, you need specialized software, something similar to this setup: http://www.sorgonet.com/network/wirelessnoap/
