Can anyone tell me how to release the old chipset fan so I can replace it?
It has 2 spring-loaded buttons at diagonally opposite corners, but
I can't figure out how to work them.

look on the backside of the board, there will be two pieces of plastic for each clip, you need to squeeze them together with pliers or somethin similar and then push pull them out.

The chipset fan is dying, maybe I could live without it, but I'd rather play safe and replace it.

you can replace the fan by just removing the screw that hold it in, you dont need to remove the heatsink itself. Just need to find another 40mm fan for it.

I have the same board, I just unplugged the fan and forgot about it. Not worth messing around with, IMO. Not too worried about heat as I don't o/c that one, and if it fries great, I could use an excuse to upgrade my main computers A7V333.
