Is there a way for me to do it without buying a dvd burner? I was wondering if it recognized a certain format or the like.

i don't think a PS2 will recognize a vcd. it can recognize DVD's and DVD-r but the means of doing so can't be spoke of here.

I know that by adding files to a vcd it is possible to have them play on a dream cast
so I thought it would work with the ps2 also

Thats why you have to just buy an Apex DVD Player for $50,plays everything!

You could boot linux on it and play them that way. Or just get a regular dvd player.
