Which actually cools better? The D-tek Pro-core and Chevette ('76 - '87) heatercore look nearly identical..and the heatercore would obviously be cheaper

They are the same, the D-TEK just comes with the correct size barbs pre installed. I have one, they're great if you have the room. :)

How does it compare as far as cooling efficiency to the Maxxpert radiator?

there are planty threads on this subject, "Search" is your friend.

but they perform about the same neverless, only difference is that d-tek is painted, barbed, and can come with shrouds, so it's ready to go, and chevy is not. but chevy is cheaper, about half the price...

personally i'd go for the d-tek for more money as i'm not really a hands on person.

One more question I can't seem to get an answer for through search...

Do I REALLY need a fan shroud? I mean come on, I could slap a fan on it the same way a shroud slaps onto the HC/radiator

thats not the point of having a fan shroud. the point is to get rid of the dead spot created by the central hub of the fan. the farther u get the fan away, the lesser the dead spot gets.

Yep. The lesser the dead spot the more cooling area you have.

Well, if you like aesthetics and a painted core, the Dtek is nice. If you don't care or don't mind adding the barbs yourself, just make your own shrouds out of plastic food containers and get a regular Chevette core.

I don't think the shroud sticks out enought to kill the dead spot though...it's like an inch thick isnt' it?

An inch or two is good. You don't lose hardly any cfm from the increased distance. You might even gain some total flow. Maybe someone can speak from experience?

There is an article on the front page regarding adding a shroud. It not only increases the area that the air will go through the core, but it also decreases the blind spot that fans have at close range.

By adding an inch or two shroud- you will notice a temperature change.

If you have a propane torch and the means to go out and get some flux and solder, by all means- do it youself. The final product is well worth it.

A little primer sprey and black high gloss and you have something you can be proud to call your own. I'm glad I didn't waste my money on a premade one.

The chevette core will actually be slightly better performance-wise, because the Dtek core's barbs are not true 1/2" ID. They're more like 3/8" ID.

Just slip your tubing over the tubes from the chevette core. :)

Also, I think the Dtek core is actually from a Ford Escort, or something similar.
