So I switched to these new single ribbon cables and received this message. Running benchmarks,the speeds are significantly lower too. What's up with that?

Will a longhorn accept advice from a Red Raider?
If you had 80-wire cables before, some of the connections must have gone bad. You need to replace them with 80-wire in order to get the full speed from your drives (ATA66 or higher).

Stupid me. When I went to Fry's today, I didn't even notice the difference. DOH
wait, aren't all cables 40pin? What are 80pin cables?

The 80 wire IDE cables have extra conductors for shielding allowing for higher signal transmission speeds. Your controller is detecting the lack of the 80 wire cables and slowing itself down.
If you need more technical info, I'll try to find an Aggie who will help :D

But yeah,switched back to my old cables and everything's fine. Think it's time for svc's round cable blowouts...

wait, aren't all cables 40pin? What are 80pin cables? Not 80-pin. 80-wire. 40 of the wires are for signal and run to the 40 pins on your connector. The other 40 are grounded and are run between the signal wires for shielding.
So:
40-wire cable --> ATA33
80-wire cable --> ATA66, 100, and 133
And, just to **** us all off :):
7-pin cable --> SATA150

now to add even more confusion
up to ata33 = 40 wires 40 pins
ata66 and up = 80 wires 40 pins
