I recently bought a 1ghz TBird, new MB (Asus A7V) new box the lot.....it worked for about 15seconds and poof!! nothin...nada....zip, zilcj etc etc..

Getting power to the MB but nothin else. Was set up as per manual.

Been told the fan may not have been seated properly but no proof...

Any ideas anyone?

Possible causes:
1) Video card not seated properly into the AGP slot(put it firmly all the way down)
2) RAM modules not seated properly.
3) Check all the connections, cables, cards, slots, drives etc.,etc.
4) The worst case scenario could be....I hate to say this but a fried CPU. Did you use proper thermal grease in between the cpu core and the HS? Did you smell anthing funny after that 15 seconds of operation? (Such as smell of burning plastic and etc.)
Just check every possible options and see what the problem really is.
Good luck.

Tried 1-3 but number 4 is my fear.....as like a prat i didnt use thermal grease, to be honest it was first attempt with amd stuff, always used intel in the past.

There was no smell of anything frying, just kinda stopped. Basically i think im f***ed but posted here on the offchance someone else may have an idea...ah well will wait for replacement and check on here on cooling etc.

thx for the prompt reply anyways matey......

No problem...
Well, since you did not put on any thermal compound or grease...that might have been a problem...The cooler and the cpu might not had a good "contact" with one another, leading to less heat transfer efficiency. It might have just killed the CPU right away. It takes less than 20 seconds to burn your CPU without proper cooling.
Anywaya...good luck and hope the replacement don't cost you any.
