Ok, I had just OCed my 2.6C to 255 bus and that would be 3.3 ghz or so. Now, thats all fine and dandy untill I change the ddr rate from auto to 400 mhz and ddr votage to 2.65. Then the comp was supposed to restart, but instead it says through the speakers" sytem failed due to cpu overclocking" and the asus p4c800 screen didnt even come up, it was jsut blank. It did this 13 times, then I gave up and left it for a minute, left, came back, and it made a REALLY odd sound, but booted and I lowered the system bus to 245 for now and put ddr voltage and speed back to auto. Do you guys know what the problem was?

Someone?

I want to go back up to 1 ghz FSB, but first i need to know what the problem was and how I can prevent it from happening again.

what ram are you using, more details vcore, did you lock the agp/pci???

I'm using RAM for ibuypower, I dont know what brand they put in, but I didnt do the upgrade to corsair ram thing. I have the p4c800 deluxe, and I just set the vcore to 1.6, and didnt touvh anything about agp or pci.

okay if you set ram speed to 400 and it screwed up then u must have some slower ram, steps you need to do to overclock, lock agp/pci frequency to 66/33,set vdimm/ram voltage to 2.65,cp voltage to 1.6v,set spread spectrum to disabled, and set the ram at the lowest speed possible in bios it should be the first choice it will say, then take the fsb back to 255 and tell us what happens

the lowest speed for the ram is really slow, like pc2100 speed. You sure ou want me to do this? And, your also sure this wont mess anything up?

ram can always run slower then its rated rather then faster, try the lowest ram speed and then you will find out how high your chip can go fsb wise

And I know I have ddr400,it even says so in the programs like sandra, aida32 and stuff.

Im jsut worried itl say "system failed due to cpu overclock" again

well you said in your first post at fsb 255 it ran fine, but when you changed from auto ram to 400 it said that so...give my steps a try,if it says that again using the lowest ram speed then it should be the cpu is maxed out
Asus uses the 400 memory setting to refer to the 1:1 ratio. Once you start raising the FSB, then the memory bus increases too. My guess is the auto setting was using the 5:4 ratio setting (probably 333 in your BIOS). Either set it back to auto or drop the memory down to the next lower setting. Anything above 250 FSB will be running DDR400 (PC3200) RAM out of spec using the 5:4 ratio (333 setting). You might have to run the lowest memory setting to go higher than 255 FSB (probably 266 memory setting in your BIOS). Also, make sure you "fix" the PCI/AGP to default.

But I mean I dont know what made it stop going from a blank screen saying that to the boot up screen with weird noises, If the voice says the vpu failed due to overclock again, I dont know if I will be able to turn it back on or not. I really doubt my cpu is maxed.

Do you think maybe I should just stop at 250 fsb, then?

when it says that, just hold down the power button then turn on again,if that doesnt work you will need to clear the cmos using the jumper on the board,it mentions where that is in the manual
Next time, just clear the CMOS. That's done by moving a jumper on the mobo. I don't know about Asus, but most mobos will default to a lower speed after several failed attempts. With my Abit IC7, if you push it too far, all you do is hit reset three times with a 5 second interval and it'll reboot at default speed. Sometimes if you unplug the computer, it'll reset. This is just part of overclocking.... no biggie.

So press the restart button 3 times and it should revert to a lower speed?Whew, I thought it would be stuck like that forever, lol, as this was one of my first times ever OCing
Reset 3 times is for Abit.... not sure if that works for Asus. If all else fails, use the reset CMOS jumper.

didn't know about that with abit boards.... how far back does this technique work?
my BD7II you press and hold Insert and it will set everything slow enough for it to boot so you can change your settings.
it doesn't like my USB keyboards... and never has worked very well since i ditched my ps2 keyboard a long time ago. this 3x reset button would be great if it worked on that old of a board. i have a IS7 now does it work on that one as well?
Don't know how far back it goes.... but that works on my IC7, so I think it should for the IS7 too.
if you dont like it talking to you then you can disable the annoying voice and you wont get that message, all you will see is nothing happening when your overclocking to much.

But then I might just think its being wierd. Lol, but guys will it always start up again after a couple pressings of the restart button cuz I dont wana have to open up the case too much.

if its acting weird then its not normal meaning not running correctly or perhaps the overclock failed.
it should but not always so sometimes you have to open the case and use the jumpers. This only happend to me once but you might even corrupt your cmos and have to put the motherboard CD in to recover your bios.
btw if you have not done so get the 1007 or higher bios.

hmm let me guess...an asus motherboard... Ive had the same prob....just unplug from the back powersupply and let it sit for 30 sec and it should forget anyhting hapened...but quickly go into the bios and lower the settings

How do I know what my bios is?
On the boot screen when your computer first starts, press the <pause> key. The BIOS should be listed there somewhere. Press any key to continue with the boot.

so are you able to run at 260 fsb????

I havent tried yet, I have been sticking at 250, do you want e to try 260? Itll be hot, Im using stock cooler and idle right now at 250 fsb on 2.6 is 41 degrees C

sure try it just remembeer to lock the agp/pci at 66/33,and run the ram slowest as possible, spread spectrum off
