i have the two computer connected through a switch, and both have internet access and their own IP addresses. i cant seem to share files or do any of that LANtastic stuff.

Heres a brief history of the two comps

1. one comp was win98 the other was XP. router set-up, both computers worked fine (file sharing and all)
2. turned router into 4 port switch by disabling the DHCP server, everything was still fine and both computers now had two seperate IPs
3. reformatted the win98 computer and put win2k on it. it now will not network with winXP machine!!

I have installed netbeui protocal on both computers but im not sure if they are working correctly...

the two IPs i have are xxx.x.36.205 and the other is xxx.x.39.129
so... whats the problem? why arent they networking?

Internal IP's start with 192.168.x.x or 10.something.x.x. Next thing did you create a share on both pc's? Did you do a search from one PC to the other in 'My Computer'? Is there a Firewall that needs configured to allow the pc's to see each other? Check those and get back to us. Oh yeah, the subnet on the pc's would be 255.255.255.0.

since im not using the router setup anymore, i dont have LAN IPs on both computers, they both have two seperate IPs. I have already disabled XP's firewall and i dont have anything else running. And yes, i have shares on both computers and i have tried calling them and they dont work.

I believe it has something to do with the IPs not being on the same subnet.
