View Full Version : MSI K7D L Motherboard
I am currently thinking of pruchase the MSI K7D L Motherboard. However there are a few things I am confused about concerning the motherboard and I can't seem to find the answers. On MSIs website they say that you must use Registered DDR, what is Registered DDR and why must I use it? Also there is no place where it says the maximum speed of the ram you may use. If anyone knows the answers to these questions please share. Thank you for your time.

You can use unbuffered or nonregistered memory in the first 2 slots of that board, but if you want to add more then all pieces must be registered.
I remember hearing that the FSB is limited to 150 on those boards, though faster RAM could ptrobably be run with more aggressive timings.

You can use Registered or Unbuffered memory in the board.
Xaotic is correct about the issue with how many sticks of what, you can use.
You can use PC2700 or P3200 if you want, but the FSB only goes up to 150, so keep that in mind.
The best memory for this board, in my opinion, is Samsung Registered ECC PC2700. You can run this stuff at 150 FSB with aggressive timings. It costs less than Crucial Registered ECC PC2100. It leaves you upgrade room, in case you ever decide that two sticks of memory isn't enough. Dual Opteron boards seem to REQUIRE Registered ECC PC2700, so if you ever want to get one of those systems (once they become affordable), you will already have memory you can use in it.
just an FYI too, but with my system with that MB it refuses to run 2 sticks of unbuffered memory even though it's supposed to be able too, each stick runs fine seperatly and it works fine with 1 stick in either of the slots, but if I have 2 in it still only reconizes 1.
and yeah the board is limited to 150FSB.
