I need to get a v.92 56k modem for my sister and was wondering what a good one would be. Price/preformance ratio is what i'm looking for, it won't have any overclocking on the comp though so pci bus speeds are not a consideration.

If its internal make sure its 'hardware'. They use thir own processor or whatever, whereas 'software' ones use your cpu so they make the whole system slower. External are better apparently but they are a lot more money. Hope it helps.

My next modem will defenitally be a USR modem. They just are the best I have ever used. My moms phone line is extremely old with lots of noise and we live about 30km from the phone company and I am getting better download speeds with a 33.6kb than most friends that live right in town(with upgraded lines) and a 56kb modem. Also the only time it will disconnect me is if someone is trying to call since I have call waiting. Super reliable and fast. Though make sure you get a hardware modem, they not only have their own cpu, but tend to be faster and more reliable also. As for price not really sure what models would be best.

hope this helps

I surely can't and would not try to tell you. I will however relay the following. Bought a cheap v92 netdragon as I was not particularly concerned about what is already a slow medium. Max bps 37,000. Could not for the life of me get it to run any faster and it was most definately slower than my old zoom internal. I have since put the zoom back in and although it is only v90, it is noticable faster, hooking up at 50600 daily and on ocassion will connect at 52,000 bps. Take Care.

Pretty much the only suggestions I could give are to buy a hardware modem (look on the box, it should be advertised), and to get one from a manufacturer you've heard of. The hardware part will make sure that your CPU isn't used for the modem's dirty work, and the brand name should help insulate you from a bad (slow) modem.

I've got a Zoom V.92 in my system now, and it seems to be a bit faster than the (probably) winmodem in my Gateway, even though it's connected at a slower speed :D

Take a look at this thread, http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=206758 . And this one, http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=206694 .
I would not recomend that you buy a USR 2977 based on my experiences.

You may find that the performance benefit of a hardware modem isn't worth having to pay several times the price.

I recently had bad luck with a Creative modem. I bought it to replace a dead modem in a customer's computer, and could not get it to install no matter what I did. I may have just gotten a faulty modem from the store though, those things happen.
