View Full Version : What's this goo?

Was goofing around and got the idea in my head that I'd see if I could move the innards of my 350w Sparkle into the case of my dead Enermax PSU. The sparkle only has an intake on the backside and only one fan while my Enermax had and opening with a fan on the bottom of it. Was thinking maybe I could somehow utilize this.

Well opening up the dead Enermax and while unscrewing one of the screws near one of the big capacitors, I noticed this cream colored goo. Seemed to be coming from the bottom of the capacitor. One of the capacitors seemed to be split also but no goo seemed to come from that. Maybe that's why it was dead.

Well I open up my Sparkle which was working before I took it out of my computer(had 2 hard drives apparently die on my last week), and I notice this same cream colored goo on several of the capacitors inside it also. It's all over the bottom of the 2 largest capacitors and surrounding them. It's on top of at least 2 other smaller capacitors which are on the other side of the PSU. What's weird is this goo seems to be on some things don't don't seem to have a capacitor near them. It's hardened so it doesn't seem to smear around.

I also have a Deer PSU opened up nearby and can't see any of this goo inside of it.

Any clues? The Enermax died in December of last year and was out of warranty. I replaced it with the Sparkle. Should I be looking for an RMA? And how the heck can I explain it to them if I'm not really supposed to be poking around inside of the thing anyway.

I don't know what the goo is called, but it is for holding things in place. (Primarily to prevent damage in shipping I would guess.)

My brand new 550W Fortron has goo all over too.

The Deer's lack of goo is just another indication that it is a cheap POS.

You know after I posted I sat down to look at them again and starting thinking it was perhaps put there to keep certain things from touching. I guess it's just the way that it's put in makes it look like it oozed all over the place. Guess someone was in a hurry that day to get off of work.

Thanks for the reply though. Glad I don't have to worry about it. And dang that Sparkle is a beast inside. Entire case was filled up. The Enermax had room for 2 fans on the inside of it but this thing doesn't it's so full.

The goo is just plain old hot glue.
