Where's the right place to clamp?

Here's the question:

Suppose you have a fitting with a single barbed end. Do you place your worm drive clamp OVER the barb and tighten it or completely PAST the barb?

I would say after the barb. After all, most people tighten their belts above their hips - not over them or below. Just seems to make more sense to tighten it after the barb.
