I checked the temps for my athlon 1700+ in the bios and it was running about 65 at idle and the mobo was at 30. This seems really hot and I was wondering if that was to be expected because I had heard these chips run hot.

First of all, WELCOME TO THE FORUMS :D

While 65°C is a bit on the hot side, some Mobos can be off by as much as 10 degrees in their temp readings...
It would help alot to know the specs of your system...What mobo, HSF, case and fan arrangement do you have?? The more info you provide, the easier to help you out...
Generally speaking tho, that is too hot for comfort...You need to get those temps down if you can...
What thermal grease are you using, is your rig Overclocked at all?
Do you have good airflow in the case?? ETC... ;)

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
Asus A7V266-C Motherboard
512mb DDR
Stock alum. Heatsink
No Case fans
Worthless no-name case

Suspecting the CPU core is a palmino. Will get back to you with all the #s on the core if that's usefull

I was idling at 60 C with a volcano 9 on a palomino
...
it suxors

I put my new SLK900 on it and i'm getting 46 at idle right now..

seems must cooler... Can it be more so?
Or should I just wait until Barton's become cheapo?

I'm at 1.8v which is 5% up from the original voltage for my overclocking purposes.

trade those pallys in on some B's most of the A's run pretty hot.

MY 1700B at idle is 32C at stock, of course I have a sk6+ with an 80mm clear vantec case fan mounted on it.

Also you should seriously consider getting some case fans, at the very least 1 intake 80mm and 1 80mm exhaust. you need to do all you can to get ambient air into your case to cool the cpu.

hope this helps a little

oh come on:rolleyes:

those temps do seem a little too high - even for a stock amd 'sink. The first thing i would suspect is the bios - do you have the latest revision installed?

No, I believe I do need to upgrade the BIOS. I was a little worried caused I've read that Athlon's run a little hot but 65 seems pretty extreme. Would a BIOS upgrade fix the possibilty of temperature sensors that aren't really measuring the CPU's heat?

and thanks for the warm welcome...

Sorry I haven't had a chance to get back to you on this until now, but I see that your problem was well-handled by the other members here.
Most of what I have found on this board indicates that you can expect a 10 degree drop in reported temps with the BIOS flash alone...that, with some additional fans, a quality HSF combo, lapping and some quality thermal paste should solve your problem and drop your temps quite a bit...
Hoping you will report back with your results as you make any improvements to your machine...We all like good info...

Have fun now... :D

just for reference

I have a 1700 xp palamino. i have a volcano 5 (it was cheap! hehe) HSF on it, mildly overclocked to 1.53ghz. I have a 120mm side fan and a 120mm blowhole at the top, with an additional 80mm fan in the front sucking in a little bit of air.

i run about 50c with full load going (F@H)
Idle, i'm about 45-46. it's a little high, but like they say, Palamino's run warmer due to higher voltages, but i believe if i replace my Volcano 5 i can reduce temps even more

I really hate that volcano 5. It caused me quite a headache by not seating properly.

Well here's a long over due update. I took the hsf off to figure out more about my cpu and it's a palminio for sure. I remounted the heatsink using some antec thermal grease and looks like the temps are now around 59 C for the CPU and 31 C for the motherboard. Hopefully sometime later this month I'll get some case fans and stuff to help with that.

Yo buddy, you should be getting lower than 46 idle...

my thermaltake volcano 7 keeps my XP1800+ @ 1700mhz full load at ~52 C... about 46-47 idle...

4 case fans...
