Alright guys, here's the story. I need a wireless network set up because there is no way to hide wires in my house without making it look awful, so I decided to go wireless. I don't have lots of cash right now (less than $200), but I can get a D-Link 614+ router and 520+ PCI card for about $120 plus tax (w/ $30 in MIRs). With those 2 paired up, I can get up to 22Mbps with them, and with a firmware upgrade I can also get 4 times the throughput of a regular 802.11b. So my question is, is this good for gaming?

The router and wireless PCI card will probably be apart 20 feet at most, with a wall separating the two. Should I just save up for an 802.11g router and card instead? I can get a linksys 802.11g wireless router for $130 alone...the card would be an extra $70 I believe. Yeah, yeah, I've done searches on here and the only thing I've read about was based upon the regular 802.11b's with 11Mbps...so please help. I want something this weekend. :D

i have the linksys 802.11g wireless access point and nic and i found that it's fantastic. it feels just like i am hard wired to the lan... i bought it from newegg and the wap with the wireless card was $200. so far, i am pretty impressed...

I bought a Netgear WGR614 for $105 with a $20 MIR and a Linksys 802.11g PCI card for my old P4 1.6. I also have a Linksys 11g card for my laptop. Everything works great. I couldn't find a place that sold the Netgear card for my laptop and they don't even make a PCI card so I just got the Linksys. Everything works fine. Definitely go with 802.11g. It's not much more now and it's standardized.

The reason I got the Netgear was because it has an SPI firewall but my bro-in-law just got the D-Link and it works well too.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll go for that Netgear WGR614. It's $109 at newegg w/ $20 MIR.

802.11b is 11mbps so thats like 1.2MBps which is WAY MORE then needed for gamming so yes it is plenty and will work just fine but dont plan on doing alot of LAN transfers cuase a 1gb transfer will take a LONG time like 15 minutes.
gamming only requires like KB of data per sec so your good to go.

hehe, i got a 802.11b linksys router myself and it works fine for gamming and internet but if i try to do a large LAN transfer then 1.2MBps is really slow.

If you ever need to do a lan transfer, just keep a spare ethernet cable near by to connect things up. I have both wired and wireless, but when I need ot move something to my laptop, ill stick it on a spare ethernet port.
