whats wrong with using antifreeze?

There is nothing wrong with using antifreeze. Just don't use a 50/50 mix. You should use a 95/5 mix, just enough to prevent corosion.
 
After running my new setup for a day with only distilled water then adding about 10% antifreeze, temps remained the same (ambient did not vary more then 1c using a external temp probe). 6 month water change seems reasonable but more frequent if it makes you feel more comfortable ;). Another plus is that antifreeze combined with yellow hi-lighter makes my water glow a bright hulk green :D

I'm pretty sure under "normal driving conditions" its every 30,000 miles ;)
