I Have a ASUS A7V8X motherboard and the athlon xp3000+ (barton core 400fsb), can this chip be used with the mobo I have and can it be unlocked? If yes, how? does it get unlocked the same as the loder xp's with just the L4 being connected?

thanks

thats a via kt400 mb right? mabie it can but i dont think it supports 400 fsb. i might be wrong but what i understand it only supports ram frequencies at 400mhz not 400fsb.

There is no need to unlock it. It is factory unlocked already. You will not be able to use the processor at a 400mhz fsb; at least not safely. Adjust the multipliers and use a lower front side bus. The motherboard will probably boot up at 1050mhz by default. Just set it to 12.5*166, and increase the front side bus from there.

Remember to not set the FSB to 200; the mobo has no 1/6 PCI divider or PCI lock, which means that your PCI bus will run at 40mhz; your IDE drives, or much else for that matter, will most likely not be able to handle that and thus you'll experience HD corruption and will most likely have to reinstall your OS.

hey guys, I've got the ASUS A7V8X MOBO

I dropped in a xp3000 (400fsb) and 512mb of samsun pc3700 (466mhz)- I understand the mobo I have does not have capabilities to run 400fsb, or the 466mhz ram- is the mobo backwards compatible to where I can use that ram and cpu, only they will not be able to go to their full capabilities? As of right now I'm getting a power-on light on the mobo, but no post. Anyone know about this? It's possible one of the parts is defective, but before tearing it apart I figured I'd ask about compatibility first, thanks!

I would recommend getting a new one, the motherboard not supporting 400 fsb is just a waste of a nice cpu imho. Make sure the board you buy supports the stock 400 fsb Bartons and see how much over it will o/c. :D

No, since your mobo is nForce2 and original poster has a VIA mobo.
nForce2 is fully compatible. VIA is not.

hmmmm- dont you think that if the cpu/ram were higher frequs that they would just not run at there capabilities: IE: the processor would post as a different one, and the ram would work at any speed setting up to 466mhz. Now I suppose I can put in a older processor and slower ram to verify if the board works or not, but if the board is not working because of incompatibility with the cpu/ram, then I would have no way of testing the barton and ram without a newer board that is native to them, looks like I might be getting a new board regardless.... anyone have any ideas

ps- the board is condensation proofed for a peltier, it did work with a xp2200 and pc2700, I looked at asus specs and it says it is compatible with athlonXP's and "up to" 1 stick of pc3200, do you think the barton and pc3700 are backwards compatible with this "older" board? It's possible that I put too much dielectric grease on the processor pins and in the zif socket holes, maybe it is insulating too much to where there is not enough electrical connections going on with the pins of the cpu chip and the board, anyone know whether that might be possible?

Don't waste your time with the XP 3000/3200 chips. Just get a XP 2500+ and some high quality PC3200 RAM. The most a KT400 board will run safely is 190 FSB and even then you are risking PCI problems. With your cooling you might be able to swing 2.5GHz (13.5x185) if you have a solid PSU behind you and your PCI bus is happy at 37MHz.

well, I already have the cpu and the ram, so I might as well use them, the big question is do I need to get a new motherboard to use them, not necessarily to get their full potential squeezed out, I'm just interested in getting a post right now with the cpu/ram/board that I have in my possession right now! I'd rather not spend any more money, if I dont have to, I dont want to buy a new motherboard that may or may not give me 5% more performance by getting full capabilities out of the cpu/ram, I'd be just fine if it will work with my 333fsb board and work a little slower than it would on the 400fsb boards.

Never tried going the other way on the FSB with a KT400 board...

Humm...The RAM will work just fine. The CPU might work at 166 FSB. Best thing to do is give it a try.

Just drop your FSB to 166 in bios. it will work. (assuming you can get to bios).

If you cant get into bios right now, you could boot into safe (100mhz) by changing a jumper pin (dont know via chipsets).

Then change your pin back to user (133/166) and rebott. You can now just move your FSB up to 166 and leave it.

I suggest getting an nforce ultra 400 board. A GREAT board for the money is the Epox 8rda+. It runs about 80 bucks shipped.
