Im getting parts for the new rig and need some advice on HD set ups...confused!!!!
I see people talk about " boot drives" and was wondering what these are exactly?
Is this a single drive with nothing on it but the OS...no apps, no files....justt the OS?
And should it be a fast drive...SCSI or ?

Id like to go RAID 0...2- 60BG 7200 drives and then a "boot drive"?

And then there's SATA....yes or no?

Most of the work this rig will do is CAD/3D? Modeling....MS Office..Opera web browser......some games.....all multitasking here.

Let me know what you expert/texperts think.

The "boot drive" is the drive with the O.S. on it.
It can be RAID, SCSI, SATA, SATA RAID, or IDE.
It can also contain all of your installed programs.
Running multiple partitions (or drives) is when you can separate your data (i.e. Windows on one partition, apps on another, ect.).
Each type of drive is fast, IDE would be the slowest, 15000rpm SCSI drives in RAID 0 would be the fastest combo. It's also expensive.
I would do a SATA RAID 0 and spend a good chunk of money on a killer video card.
The CAD/3D proggies and the games will appreciate it.
Good luck!

Run 2 SATA Raptors in Raid 0 Striped array with your OS and programs installed here. Then you can run your 60GB "mass storage drives" on the Primary IDE channel to store your data such as MP3, pictures, video or whatever you might happen to be storing. I set the MY DOCUMENTS folder to point to my "mass storage drive" as I call it. Just right click on the My Documents folder and enter the location you would like it to be. Also, a bit of advise, Only have the Raid setup when installing windows. After windows is loaded then go ahead and install the 2 mass storage drives. This will prevent any boot information from being written on the mass storage drives. It will keep these data drives totally seperate from the Windows install. And with the money saved using this set-up buy yourself a whip-ass video card! Hope this helps.
