is there a jumper setting to allow for just a 32gb clip like on ibm deskstar hard drives for WD 40 giggers? my friend got one for his old p3 450 with 440bx chipset and it doesnt detect the 40 gig hard drive.. so i was wondering if i could somehow get it to work without upgrading the whole system

You might want to look for a bios update. Other than that, it should detect the hd at the max size it can read, wasting the rest of the space.
WD might also have a driver that installs on the boot sector for the drive to read all of it if your bios can't.

Yeah, the drive should come with a floppy that will install a custom boot program (doesn't erase lilo I don't think, in acse you use linux) The bios will report at the 32mb size, but windows should see the full size.
actually i've got a few of those old mobo's with 440bx chipsets and most of them that I have, there's BIOS upgrades for, so just flash the latest BIOS and you should be good

Scroll down about halfway. (http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp) WDs can use two jumpers to be recognized in older MBs.
I had this smae problem with my uncle's 440BX and a 60g WD drive. It would recognize the HD but only part of it. I figured out the jumper setting and I set 2 partitions. It should work for you.
BTW we are talking about the WD drive right? If you dont want to read my link just jump pins 6-5 and 4-3.
Goodluck
If you don't mind using a DDO(Dynamic Drive Overlay) one for a WD is here:

I'm not partial to them, but it'll give you a bit more room without using an PCI adapter.
