"We've been waiting for the commodity suppliers to provide the key features we needed for visualization. This round of chips is really the first time they've had the image quality and the performance we need to put these into a high-performance architecture," said Guy Russell, a senior manger of the Onyx team.
Looks like better image quality pays off ;)
Yeah buddy! I try not to be bias, but that's some great news. ATI's been smelling nVidia's butt for a while, it's good for them to have a better card for the time being.
yep, i love the competition, that meens lower prices!

man o man ati are really doing it now. what with this and a possible ati-powered x-box2 they will definatly be ahead of the game.
Does nVidia and Micro$oft have a contract? If so, that'd be some craziness if Micro$oft breaks that contract and goes with ATI. I'd probably pee myself.

My guess is that when it comes to things like these, any contracts are strictly on a product by product basis. Of course, thats only my guess...and if Microsoft is entertaining the idea of going with ATi, then i doubt there would be any sort of contract breach. If there is one thing Microsoft sould be able to do well, its doing everything they can to avoid going to court again, heh.
Well, to be honest with you I wouldn't want ATi to make the gfx for the x-box 2. That's what made nVidia get behind isn't it?

No, its not. It was rumor that the X-Box was the r eason for it, but it was just nVidia fanboys coming up with excuses other then nVidia making a mistake.
They were late because they mis-judged when the .13 micron process would be ready. Also, their deisgn on the process wasnt turning out good yeilds at all, which casued more backups.
nVidia has totaly different departments to handle video cards, X-Box, motherboards, ect.

the x-box did take some of the engineering talent from nvidia's advanced GPU department, so it did contribute some to the slide, but the factors evans cites are the main reasons. however to completely discount that is a mistake as well. This is partly realized by the "incomplete" nature of the 5800 design, once the focus was back on GPUs the 5900 was made into a decent card, but again this is not the only reason for the recent GPU problems that nvidia has had.

The reason i doubt the X-Box took engineering talent away from the FX 5800 is because both nVidia and ATi have about 3 SEPERATE teams working each on future cores. I doubt nVidia would have taken engineers away from their team developing their soon to be released core, to design a core that really is just a castrated design of a core already in production (which im sure needed very little engineering talent in the first place)

you have to ask yourself what the x-box gpu really is. Well, it's a castrated gf4 ti.
The x-box gpu was nothing new therefor, even if it was the same team that designed it, it wouldnt have made a noticable dent in nvidia's other technology.

It's a GF3 with the GF4's memory optimisations and shaders. nVidia having branched into the console and motherboard market would actually bring in revenues and not the opposite.
While the NV30 was a "flop" here in the enthusiast market, it certainly wasn't everywhere else. The NV35 is pretty much on equal ground with ATi's latest offering too. ATi has better AA, nV has better Aniso. They both optimise in drivers.
