G'day everybody...

I'm going to overclock my computer tonight and I wondered whether I could get some last minute advice from all the o/c brainiacs around these parts....?? :-)

I've got an Athlon XP 2000+ (AIUHB code, so I think it's a B..?) and an Asus A7N8X deluxe mobo, with 2x256 sticks of PC-2700 CAS 2.5 kingston.

Basically, i want to run it at 166mhz FSB, at around 2200XP equiv. speeds (so about 1800Mhz.) (166x11 ???) At the moment i've got the stock AMD fan for it, but i'm getting a better one tonight (sorry for the lack of detail, but I really don't know.) I've got a decent case with 5x80mm ~2500RPM fans. At the moment it runs ~25 celcius with nothing happening.

Can i get some advice on FSB, multiplier and RAM (and any other applicable settings) for this o/c? I'd like to get it right the first time, and although i realise this is an inexact science, hopefully your wealth of experience can point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

What revison is your A7N8X-dlx, rev 1.04 or rev 2?

Rev 2 officially support 200 MHz FSB, whereas rev 1.04 is a luck of draw to get to 200 FSB.

What CPU heat sink and fan?

This link may help:

It's a rev 1.04, but i only want 166mhz FSB, not worried 'bout 200 :-)

The AMD fan is the OEM outta the box, runs at about 4000RPM. I'm gonna upgrade to whatever i can get tonight, though...

Any thoughts on settings...

Hmm i must have lots of luck cuz iv had two A7N8x 1.04 boards and both can get 200 with a little agp voltage.

i suppose i'm not asking a great deal from the CPU....

Would a cooler u/g and just the default settings (RAM, vCore etc. do me for this)??

If you plan to overclock the CPU, try to get a SK7 (~$20) with a high CFM fan such as ThermalTake SF II (~$10). For more aggressive cooling, a Vantec Tornado 80mm fan with variable resistor mod (10 Ohm 10 Watt, search the General Cooling for details) to adjust the fan speed and noise level, and a SLK-800U (~$35) would be even better.

For FSB, you can try starting with 180 MHz FSB, with memory ras/cas timing at 6-3-3-2. You may need to increase Vdimm to 2.7 - 2.8 V to get the memory module at higher FSB to above 190 towards 200 MHz.

Some rev 1.04 can do 200 MHz or above, and it depends on how your 2700 memory overclocking also. So set up your system to start with 180 MHz, SYNC mode, AGP locked at 66 MHz, memory setting user defined at 6-3-3-2 (as said earlier).

Assuming your CPU can do 2.0 - 2.2 GHz with stock heat sink to begin with, so at FSB 180, the mulitplier should be 11, the CPU would be running at 1980 MHz to begin with.
