From what I hear, alot of the cd-rw makers actually come from the same company, but they just rebadge the names. I think cd-roms are basically cd-roms. I don't think there is a huge difference between them.
it has more features, is "top of the line" so you pay a price for that, and just because it plextor:D they do make great drives from what i hear, and i don't know of any other drives that can record 1gb of info on a regular disc.

wow, really?
It just oozes quality. I dont know about other features, but the feel of the tray, motors, and just everything intangible about it is three steps above the competition, that is, Sony, MSI, Lite-On, Panasonic, and NEC (those I have experience with).

I'll bet it can't make a backup for newer games. 'nuff said.
huh? you get software to do that, its not the burner itself...

The burner has to be capable. It is the burner. The software is also very important, but your Plexi won't do it no matter what software you use, and that's a fact.

Explain. I back up my game CDs & have not had any issues when using my Plex. Does it have to do with the newer models? I have a 12X.

I think he's talking about the newer copy protections (Safedisk, SecuRom) and only certain burners are capable of burning a perfect 1:1 image.
Well F1 2002 & 2001 both use SafeDisk & I have perfect backups of them.
I've also got an old Plextor 12x and I agree its very high quality. It also has the great ability of reading a disk no matter how scratched, dirty or damaged it is. You could practically break a disk in 2, put both parts in and it would still read. My friends always get me to read their old discs on it. Its also been very reliable.

Yes, you are correct. The 12x is the only plexi that can correctly encode EFM. All the newer plexis cannot perform this function. They took the ability out. As I am told, if you have a 12x plexi, do not upgrade the firmware, as it will eliminate the ability to make copies of newer protected games. This info comes from a tech at plextor.

This website shows which burners can encode EFM correctly. You will see only 1 model of plexi that has 2 sheep under the heading "Correct EFM Encoding".
ohhhh, well dern, oh well i don't usually make backup of games anyway.
Plextor is the Rolls Royce of burners. They were amazing back in the days of 8x being a killer speed--they were among the first to adopt buffer protection, large buffers, and really kept their firmware updated so you could burn on just about any media. However, these days I'm not sure if a Plextor warrants the extra $$. Thank god for Lite-on! Cheap guys like me would be lost without them.
Cool, thanks:beer: Looks like a Firmware mod to get the new Plexis doing all that they are suppose to do.
