View Full Version : WinNT serving Linux
Just a general question to help troubleshoot for me...how would a WinNT server interact with a Linux (this case, RH 9) client for internet activity? Would it not be able to send anything coming from the Linux box to the internet?

for internet access, use a proxy server on windows (ISA Server, wingate...), or a router.
If you want to file share, use Samba.
Should have been more specific...
My school's network is on WinNT, Im on Redhat 9. I can receive, download, etc. anything fine, but I can't send email or connect through a P2P program. Wondering if its a Windoze problem or something solvable on my end.

Neither. Itīs mostly aproblem how your school set up the windows box or the ISP of your school.
Do you need to use a proxy when accessing the web?
What host do you use as your SMTP server? A school/ISP provided one or an external one?
P2P programs usually want port forwarding on the router. Since youīre not Administrator on the Windows box and the school wonīt give you that access, you can t set that up. If you use a mandatory proxy to access the web, then you should try and put the proxy in the P2P application config
I don't use a proxy, its automatic (via DHCP I think- not a network guy). The SMTP server is external, its my home ISP's. Also, any Dell Windows box  here can access Kazaa (or "KAA-za" /my rant for the day), so Im wondering if its an issue on my end.

1) there are transparent proxies
2) most probably the ISP blocked outgoing port 25 (SMTP)
3) kazaa uses port 80 afaik (it was made to circumvent proxies). So why donīt you use kazaa-lite inside wine?
Whatīs your IP inside the school? what p2p program do you wanna use?
Ok, I dont know anything about this type of stuff (networking, internet, etc.) so please bear with me.
I can't get Kazaa lite to work under wine, and have heard it might have something to do with RH 9. Ive tried WinMX under wine and gtk-gnutella, neither have been able to connect. Ill try to find the sysadmin and ask whether or not 25 is blocked.
This is what I get from ifconfig, addy wise:
inet addr:10.21.5.59 Bcast:10.21.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0

Most likely you are NOT going to be able to use your home smtp server to send email. The email will origionate from a different network and the ISP will block it. You can get around this if they offer an authenticated SMTP server. Then you supply a username and password to relay mail through your home ISP's servers.
The network admins are probably blocking all other p2p programs at the firewall/proxy. if kazaa uses port 80, it will be more difficult to filter.
What error do you get when sending email, this will help a lot!
About the SMTP, I can send from a different ISP (AOHell) at my mom's, and the ISP is at my dad's. As for errors, it just times out.

??? what are you trying to say, im confused. You can send email from AOL on your moms (computer, office, interoffice network???) and the ISP is at your dads ( office, computer... what do you mean???)
ISP - Internet Service Provider (a company like Verizon, AOL, TimeWarner, ISWest that provides an internet connection at your house or office)
AOL will work from virtually anywhere because you log onto AOL's network with the AOL browser and that lets you send mail on thier servers. (Because you are logged into AOL's network)
What Im trying to say is that I can access the SMTP server through another ISP already, so that shouldn't be the problem (ISP is SNET, accessed through AOL).

it may be that it is blocked at the firewall / proxy server.
If you logon to a windows box can you do what you are trying to do with linux?

So your school ISP blocks outgoing SMTP. There is nothing you can do about that.

Probably not the ISP, just the router/proxy server that dishes out the internet access....
