160 gig 7200 rpm 8MB cache for $100

I saw this at office depot today. 160 GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache for $170 - $20 instant rebate - $50 MIR = $100

The deal ends on July 19 I think because Maxtor ends the MIR then.

It's not shown up on office depot website. I went there to check out other deal listed here about $20 dvd drive and saw this deal.

They also had some I/O magic CDRW for $21.

Whats with the rebates, are these drives no good? Or is this just a get-people-in-the-store-and-hope-they-buy-more trick?

These drives are good. I think the manufacturer is just trying to cut prices so they could help vendors get rid of them. And a lot of times buyers forget to send in their MIR, so it kind of works like extended warranty plans (buyers usually buy them, but they never use them even when their product breaks down). ;)

I think another reasons for them is that the SATA and 10,000 rpm are becoming mor epopular now.

Ive just got a couple of maxtor 120 gb drives 8mb cache and think they are ok, however I personally find that they create more noize than my 120 gb WD 8mb cache drive

the reason they do MIRs is it gets people to buy the product at full price, and a good amount of people will either fill the form out incorrectly, send it in when its too late, or just not send it at all. In some manufactorers case, they keep the money for six months interest free :D.

the real purpose of mail in rebates isnt that they HOPE people wont correctly fill out or forget to fill out their forms... the manufacturers are getting the same price they always were ... the looser in the rebate game often is the middleman or the retailer.... say it costs 20$ to make a HD they sell it to a distributor for 50... that distributor sells it to a retailer for 75 and the retailer sells it to the public for 100... now the manufacturer can offer a mail in rebate of 25$ but all they do is price it into what they sell to the middleman... someone gets stuck with the hot potato and its never the manufacturers

I picked up one of the 160GB Maxtor's for $70 a month ago when Staples was having that sweet deal and I've gotta say that i love it. I haven't really found it to be excessively loud, but then again, I typically have enough background noise in my house that I can't hear my comp at all (well except the DVD drive....it's always loud!)

The thing about this HD is that it's ATA 133...not the usual 100..which means for my system which uses the IS7, I'll have to get the SATA converter (serillel2) and hook it up to SATA to fully take advantage of ATA 133...the converter is probably around $25..... hhmmm

they made it ATA133 just for that reason, so some will buy it over other ATA100 drives. It cannot do 133 ever! :)

I guess that's why it's on sale ..LOL..people rush out to get it not knowing they can't really run it 133 unless they do what i said above...is this a marketing scheme? lol

I got the 120 Gb Maxtor, very quiet. Yea, totally right, it doesnt matter really if the drive is ATA100 or ATA133, since they dont even run close to 100mb/s. Sisoft SANDRA's file system benchie says the maxtor runs at 39,000 kb/s, which is 39 Mb/s approx. Sort of like SATA 150, it's dependent on the drive itself.

How can they make more noise than WD? I have 3 of them running right now and they make No noise. I hear the fan more than the HDD.

I've had WD before, I own about 8 drives, and I have to say that so far the Maxtor are more quiet than the WD, even their SE.

In most computers, the fan is heard over the hdd, but there is a diference of course between the WD hdd's and the Maxtor ones.
