What's the best way to block Popups?? People tell me firewalls, but i was was wondering if there was an easier way, or a firewall with a simple setup.
PopupBlocker will block all pop up windows unless you hold ctrl while clicking on a link.
I use POW from AnalogX.com but you have to add each window to a database so it takes some time to set up but works well.
I'm sure there's a few others but these are the two that I've actually used.

The best way to block popups is to not use IE.
Try Firebird, its better than IE imho. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird

I dont use IE. It's installed though. The Popup Blocker Appears to be working:cool: , But i've only been online a few minutes
When I disabled the service called Messenger in services.msc that cut down on some of the pop ups but not all of them.

if i go to a website that has mountains of popups, i close the window and never return... any website that feels like they need to bombard me with 100 popups is not worth my time. :)

I personally use Opera as my browser which does a great job of blocking popups but since my better half wont convert and only will use IE I got the new google toolbar with a popup blocker built in. It seems to be working great for her as now it says 157 popups blocked.......

Opera browser is my choice as well, a simple click, click and no more popups (or under). Easy as can be. Just as easy to allow them back also. Or you can set it to open popups in the background (pop under) or to only open requested popups.
I prefer Super popup blocker, works awsome,
and any java enabled browser will get popup's
if you turn off java then popups go away, however so do all the fancy parts of websites.

All the popups I've ever gotten seem to be Javascript based, never gotten a Java-based popup before. Hope I never do, Java is fat and slow.

Another vote for Firebird. Or any member of the Mozilla family for that matter.......
both Opera and Mozilla have in-built pop-up support, and ZoneALarm Pro (firewall) has a built-in pop-up stopper as well.

I use Zonealarm for a firewall, and it also blocks popups. I do not get any at all. It all has to go thru my router, then thru my firewall software.

Use Panic Ware's Free POPUPSTOPPER + run adaware and spybot reguaraly, you will get no popups ;)
Firewalling software to stop popups? Thats just wrong, it should be something at the browser level stopping popups because they happen at the browser level, not something at the packet level.

Here's a link to the software (the Panicware utility) I use with IE and have been very pleased with the performance. Takes a little practice because some of your downloads and links are interpeted as popups, however, a programmable sound bit notifies you when it blocks one and all you do is hold down 'ctrl' and it lets the link through. Panicware's Popupstopper (http://www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html) ;) Now if some one'll do something about SPAM!

I use Popup Stopper from Panicware. It's pretty good and the
free version is all you need. But more and more sites are going
to that damned Flash crap. What we really need as a commercial
quality Flash stopper. The ones I have checked out just are
not good enough or too cheesey.

no. people are getting confused here. firewalling stops messenger service popus, but not window-popus.
Oh, ok. I had a suspicion it was that.
People should just turn off the Messaging service.

Don't install flash? :eh?: It is a choice whether or not to install it..
Yeah but there are some really cool flash sites out there...

I wish it was that easy. The trouble is that Flash is useful for
stuff on a lot of web pages. What I really want is something
easy like PopUpStopper where I can toggle of on and off.
Flash was cool until too many sites started abusing it with
popup Flash advertising. We need a new product called
FlashUpStopper. :D

My firebird stops most of the flash ads, actually. I run it with the adstopper plugin, and a custom userContent.css setup for ad blocking (http://www.floppymoose.com/). I rarely see a flash ad (as long as the site admin puts his ads into /ads/ or other filtered items.)
It even filters the Vantec ad on the forums. (I'm nice to skip and unfiltered that ad though ;))
Most of the time, I simply don't install flash. A raw install of firebird doesn't have it by default, and in my day to day surfing, I don't run across anything I need flash for. Maybe it's just me.

i got the google toolbar. that thing works wonders since i use google all the time anyway. i now find myself staying with IE simply to use the google bar...
I use pukiller and its just as nice.;)
PopupKiller can be found at download.com and is a <100k file. It is great IMO, because it stops ALL popups from popping up, but it is so small.
Adaware and SpyBot do wonders.
